The NASCAR Cup Series race last weekend at Roval saw some wild moment and post-race comments. JGR veteran Denny Hamlin admitting he would’ve let Ross Chastain pass to avoid Joey Logano’s promotion starter talks around race manipulation as well as NASCAR’s restriction on how much teams can inform drivers about the points situation.
At the moment the team are prohibited from discussing pints unless they are not in the cutoff line. Talking about the drama, Joey Logano pointed out that he doesn’t think teams talking with drivers regarding points isn’t taking thinks too far regarding manipulation. It’s going too far when teams asking drivers to straight up rivals, they have partnership with.
It’s a slippery slope either way because where is the line? Is just telling somebody where you are in points and what’s going on around you, is that too far? Saying straight-up what to do is probably too far. We can kind of understand that, but just saying what the point situation is, I don’t think that’s too far, in my opinion.
Joey Logano said via Cup Scene.
The three times Cup Series champion believes that the drivers should be given the opportunity to make decisions for themselves. He pointed out that informing drivers about the points situation isn’t race manipulation, it is just information sharing and the drivers are allowed to do what they seem fit with the knowledge.
At that point, it’s up to the driver to make the best decisions for whatever they’re trying to accomplish, which is usually winning the race. I think just feeding someone data it still leaves it in the driver’s hands to do what they please with it. It’s just giving information. That’s all you’re doing.
Joey Logano added.
Furthermore, he pointed out that while he finds it okay to share information there are some gray areas that shouldn’t be crossed. He wants the sanctioning body to draw a black and white line regarding the situation. If the sport can tighten up the rules and gives a best understanding on the situation for the drivers, things can be much better.
Like I said, I think if you’re just saying what’s going on, it’s probably OK, I think. I do think there are some gray lines of, to your point, where is the black and white of this you can do and this you can’t do. I’m sure we could probably tighten some of that up a little bit and just help us understand that.
Joey Logano asserted.
Denny Hamlin offers a slightly different take than Joey Logano
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin shared his thoughts on the same situation. He backed Logano’s points that there shouldn’t be an issue with information during the race and the drivers should be given the opportunity to make decisions. He backed his argument by highlighting how drivers’ team up to win superspeedway races.

How’s it any different than like a superspeedway? If I know I can’t win, I’m picking which car I’m going to push to the finish. I’m probably going to push the one that I think is I don’t want to get five bonus points, so we always have those scenarios where we’re picking and choosing who we’re helping, but that and the wrecking for sure.
Denny Hamlin said.
The comments from the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers and his ex-teammate Logano seems reasonable. The limit on how much information can be shared regarding pints situation on team radio should be better explained and NASCAR should make rules clear regarding race manipulation.
