Recently, The Cenation Leader addressed this long-standing critique, offering a compelling explanation of his character and its defining traits.

Speaking to Collider, the Hollywood star explained that portraying his character as nearly unbeatable was designed to make his defeats feel more significant within the story. He noted that whenever he lost, it created a dramatic shift in the WWE Universe. To achieve that impact, he and the company had to craft an arc where the 16-time WWE Champion rarely faced defeat.

One of the biggest hang-ups in the middle portion of my career was that, spoiler alert, John wins. What people don’t understand is, I think now, maybe, as we begin to reflect back here on this last run of like, ‘Hey, man, I was in it for the long haul.

Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL stated that a potential clash between Cena and Rhodes could be “the biggest match in wrestling” today.
