The 2024 Laver Cup is set to get underway on Friday, September 20. The two teams, Team Europe and Team World, will be fighting for top honors. While John McEnroe‘s Team World will hope to land a third consecutive title, Bjorn Borg‘s Team Europe will try to reclaim the throne. Amid this tussle, McEnroe has shared his views about first-timer Carlos Alcaraz.

McEnroe said that Alcaraz is his favorite player on the tour and that watching him felt like a breath of fresh air. However, the American legend expects the Spaniard to play “terribly” this weekend.

I love Carlos Alcaraz, I have to admit. He's the biggest breath of fresh air we've had in this sport in ten years, but I expect him to play terribly this weekend.

Notably, Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz will be making his first appearance at the Laver Cup. The Spaniard will represent Team Europe alongside the likes of Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev, among others.

John McEnroe wants to finish on a high

With John McEnroe set to end his stint at the Laver Cup after Berlin, the Team World captain wants things to end on a high. Although it took five editions for McEncore’s team to land their first title, Team World repeated the feat in 2023. With the two teams preparing for the seventh edition, McEnroe is hoping to win a third title.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion is set to make way for Andre Agassi after leading Team World in the last seven editions of the tournament. But before that, McEnroe wants to win the title one last time.

It would be great to go out on a high...We play a very formidable team; we’re up against it each year...You can never relax and often, it comes down to that last day where more is at stake.
John McEnroe said

McEnroe also talked about his experience at the tournament so far. He said that sitting by the players’ side helps him stay connected to the sport. However, the American captain admitted to the challenges this opportunity poses.

Speaking of Team World’s first title in 2022, McEnroe said it felt great to finally end the drought. But the 65-year-old claimed that his side put forth many good performances and the results did not always reflect how close they were to winning the title.

I think we’ve always had a good team spirit. It was closer than the score indicated.
John McEnroe added

This year, McEnroe will be leading the likes of Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Francisco Cerundolo, and Alejandro Tabilo in Berlin, where Team World will be hoping to win a third consecutive title.
