During his playing days, John McEnroe‘s volatile temperament got him into trouble a lot. He would throw tantrums, destroy rackets, lash out at umpires, his opponents, as well as the fans. After retirement as well, McEnroe makes frequent headlines, all thanks to his controversial comments behind the microphone.

McEnroe was one of the commentators for ESPN in the recently concluded Australian Open. In the men’s final, Carlos Alcaraz came from a set down to defeat 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic to win his first title in Melbourne and become the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. In the women’s final, Elena Rybakina downed Aryna Sabalenka to win her career’s second Major.

Now that the Australian Open is done and dusted, everyone is going back home. McEnroe was in such a rush at the Melbourne airport that he lost his temper after a young fan, who called the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion his hero, kept asking for a photo.

In a clip that has now gone viral, McEnroe can be seen emerging from a car. The fan grabbed the opportunity to have a selfie with the tennis great. But McEnroe answered, “Not right now, mate.”

The teenager kept pestering him and even offered to carry his bags. But McEnroe responded, “I’m going to need you to stay away from me, okay?” When the boy didn’t follow McEnroe’s request, the former tennis player said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! I’m leaving, time’s up.”

When the fan attempted to take a selfie with the former World No.1, a frustrated McEnroe yelled, “Will you stop? Stop! Jesus. I mean, are you kidding me?” The fan told him, “I still love you, John,” but to this, McEnroe told him to “Go f**k yourself“.

A clip of Rafael Nadal leaving Melbourne has also gone viral, with users now comparing how Nadal’s interaction with fans was a far cry from that of McEnroe. A journalist asked Nadal if he would “answer two questions,” to which the 22-time Grand Slam champion folded his hands and politely declined. “I’m so sorry, I have plenty of things but thank you.

John McEnroe lavishes praise on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Since the 2024 season, only one of these two players, Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, has won in the Majors. Last year, Sinner played all four Grand Slam finals, winning titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Alcaraz played his fourth consecutive Grand Slam final in this year’s Australian Open.

John McEnroe, like the whole tennis world, is in awe of the World No.1 and the World No.2. During his interview with El Pais, McEnroe shared what makes the two youngsters different from those of his generation.

Honestly, I think both Sinner and Alcaraz have evolved very quickly in all aspects of the game. We see how, in Major tournaments, they are able to apply important technical variations in their style, and that directly affects the results. Both maintain their essence and their brave spirit, but they also know how to adapt mentally and technically to situations, competing in a very intelligent way.

In the Melbourne Slam, Sinner was bidding for a three-peat but suffered a five-set defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic. Last year, Sinner and Alcaraz met in three Grand Slam finals.

They represent today’s tennis: a new generation that combines emotion and technical experience. In my era, all of this was unthinkable. We are very unfortunate to enjoy both.

John McEnroe added

In their head-to-head record, the Italian trails 6-10. They last met in the title clash of last year’s ATP Finals, which the four-time Grand Slam champion won.
