On Tuesday (August 20), an announcement by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) shook the entire tennis world. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was cleared of any wrongdoing after he tested positive for a banned substance twice in March this year.

Former Australian player John Millman believes the Novak Djokovic-led Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has the ability to represent the players better amid criticism from every corner toward ITIA and the Italian player.

Unlike WTA star Simona Halep, Sinner won’t be dealing with a strict punishment. A performance-enhancing drug called roxadustat entered the system of Halep accidentally and the ITIA imposed a four-year ban on her. Later, the Court of Arbitration (CAS) reduced the period of ineligibility to nine months.

Sinner, on the other hand, faced no such problems. The prize money he earned from Indian Wells was taken away, as well as the points he received. The Italian tested positive for the banned steroid, clostebol, during the Indian Wells and after the tournament.

Milman, who is a huge fan of Djokovic, lauded him for PPTA, a players’ union the Serb founded along with Vasek Pospisil. The 35-year-old also sympathized with Halep, who had to fight continuously for a long time to reduce her ban.

Another legacy that he and the team at the PTPA is trying to create is a body that better represents players. Now I’m sure that includes when a player tests positive, that their case Is heard in a timely manner, I was appalled how long it took for Simona to have hers heard, I was appalled to learn how long it took Tara Moore to have hers investigated.

During the investigation, Sinner stated that a spray he used contained ‘clostebol’. It was given to him by his physiotherapist who had bought it from Italy. There are also reports that state that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) may intervene if the necessity arises

Sinner recently won the Cincinnati Open with a straight-set win over Frances Tiafoe. His next target is the US Open which starts on August 26th.
