‘Jon filling in would show a humbleness’ – Chael Sonnen speaks out on Jon being the back-up fighter for the Stipe Miocic-Francis Ngannou rematch
Stipe Miocic (L) and Francis Ngannou (R)

Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou face off at UFC 260, on the 27th of March, this year in a match for the heavyweight title. The Champion, Miocic will be looking forward to keeping Francis Ngannou’s exemplary striking at bay, like he did, back when the two met three years ago. However, there is a lingering question as to who ‘will be the back-up fighter’ for the marquee clash.

Speaking about this in his own YouTube channel, former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen, brought up several names who could act as the back-up fighter for the clash. But, he also singled out heavyweight newcomer Jon Jones, justifying how being a back-up fighter, would help him grow in terms of discipline and bravery.

That division is very tricky right now because of the insertion of Jon Jones

Sonnen was quoted as saying, “If it’s not Blaydes, it’s not the Beast, it’s not Volkov and it’s not Overeem. Who? Who is the heavyweight backup and that division is very tricky right now because of the insertion of Jon Jones. And, the working belief that Jon is going to take on the winner of Francis vs Stipe. It’s very tough, it’s very tough to become a number one contender, when the number one contender is identified and sitting out and the championship itself is still lingering.

Saying how being a back-up fighter would help Jon Jones, Sonnen said, “Jon filling in would show a humbleness. Would show you something to look forward to. Would force himself. I mean a byproduct of that would be a forced discipline, thus the training camp. Not to mention, the bravery he would be showing. Think about doing that, from Jon!

It is to be noted that Jon Jones is expected to make his heavyweight debut taking on the winner of Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou.
