Tom Aspinall stirred up excitement in Manchester in the early hours of Sunday morning. With that win, everyone’s thoughts turned to the UFC heavyweight champion. Interestingly, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones posted a cryptic message on social media a few hours later. In doing so, Jones hinted that he was beginning to consider facing off against the powerful Englishman.
The Englishman successfully defended his interim UFC heavyweight title by defeating top contender Curtis Blaydes. Aspinall ruthlessly knocked out Blaydes within the very first minute of round 1. The Brit called out Jon Jones during his octagon interview with Daniel Cormier. Meanwhile, the UFC heavyweight king also didn’t hold himself back. Jones made a cryptic reference to his rival on social media.

Interestingly, in the UFC, interim titles are typically not defended. The interim titleholder usually faces the official champion in their next fight. However, due to Jones’ ongoing recovery from an injury, the UFC has chosen not to strip him of his title.
Instead, they plan to reschedule his bout against Stipe Miocic. Consequently, this delay has meant that Aspinall has had to bide his time to face the winner of the Jones vs. Miocic fight. It remains to be seen if Jones will accept a future bout.
The widely-regarded greatest fighter in MMA history has often distanced himself from a clash with Aspinall. Meanwhile, Aspinall has always desired a bout with Jones. On many occasions, Aspinall has even called the champion irrelevant in the division for not fighting him. The Brit believes Jones cannot hold the title and sit back at his house. Interestingly, another MMA fighter shares the same opinion.
Former UFC fighter calls for Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall over Stipe Miocic legacy fight
The victory over Blaydes marked the 31-year-old Brit’s third first-round finish in a row. Aspinall’s interesting feats keep on rising as he fights. He had previously disposed of Sergei Pavlovich in just 69 seconds at UFC 295 and Marcin Tybura in only 73 seconds in July of 2023. These extraordinary performances have not gone unnoticed in the eyes of viewers.

The dominant nature of his first interim title defense has only increased calls for the UFC and Jones to abandon plans for a Stipe Miocic fight. Even former UFC fighter Derek Brunson speaks out in favor of Aspinall’s wish. He believes the Brit is now ready to take up a fight against the heavyweight king.

Brunson was blunt about what he wanted to see next. Now, Jones is expected to return to the Octagon at UFC 309 on November 9th at Madison Square Garden. The long-awaited showdown with the former heavyweight kingpin Stipe Miocic might be announced soon. Unless Miocic gets injured, the fight between Jones and Aspinall will not happen. As such, Aspinall has to wait a while.
