The interim UFC heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, has been eager to secure a title unification fight against the reigning UFC heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. However, after facing continual refusals from Jones, Aspinall began criticizing the heavyweight champion. Most recently, he expressed his frustrations on a show hosted by English broadcaster and journalist Piers Morgan.

Piers Morgan is quite familiar with the events and dynamics within the UFC community. Over the years, he has engaged in conversations with many prominent figures in the sport. Recently, UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall appeared on Morgan’s show, where they discussed several intriguing topics. During the conversation, Aspinall shared his reasons for dismissing Jon Jones as one of the best fighters of all time.

Let me first start by saying that Jon is absolutely elite, and I completely agree with the notion that he’s one of the best fighters ever… But the way I look at it, he has failed a couple of drug tests. To me, that rules you out of being the best of all time, for me, personally.

Throughout his illustrious MMA career, Jones has been involved in various contentious activities. One of the most talked-about controversies in his life is his drug testing saga. In his UFC career, Jones has faced two suspensions for testing positive for banned substances. As a result, several people in the MMA community have excluded him from discussions about the greatest fighters of all time.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only time that Aspinall has brought up Jones’ dark chapters of drug abuse. This occurred amid the ongoing back-and-forth between the two heavyweight fighters. In this context, Jones has consistently dismissed the idea of a potential fight against Aspinall, citing one key reason.

According to the UFC heavyweight champion, the British fighter would not significantly impact his legacy in the promotion. While Jones is focused on his legacy, Aspinall appears to be indifferent to that notion.

Unlike Jon Jones, Tom Aspinall is unbothered about his legacy in the promotion

Tom Aspinall defeated some of the formidable heavyweight fighters to become the interim champion of the division. With roaring high in confidence, Aspinall seemingly wants to carry on with this momentum and clash against top fighters like Jon Jones.

Jones’ constant refusal to engage in a matchup during his UFC career did not sit well with Aspinall. Consequently, the British fighter began criticizing the UFC heavyweight champion for using a questionable excuse to avoid their bout. However, unlike Jones, Aspinall expressed a different perspective on the issue, which he clearly stated in a podcast episode a few months ago.

In all honesty, I’ve not really got any interest in being the best heavyweight ever… I’m not bothered about legacy, I just feel like I’m the best heavyweight in the world and I want people to recognize it. That’s it.

Aspinall aims to showcase his potential by testing his skills against top MMA fighters like Jones. He believes that defeating such high-profile opponents would bring him the recognition he deserves. This is one of the reasons Aspinall is determined to face Jones. Recently, UFC CEO Dana White confirmed that this matchup is in the works. Now, it remains to be seen when it will be finalized.
