Jon Jones’ mega-announcement ruffled the feathers of many hoping for a potential Octagon return. Moreover, a UFC heavyweight title unification news against Tom Aspinall. Interim champ Aspinall has been waiting top of the queue for a while now. However, fans are now dejected on both counts. Since winning the then-vacant heavyweight belt in 2023, Jones’ activity level has been low. Injuries and delayed contract negotiations have kept him out of action.

Contractual talks and a “f—ck you” amount of fighter compensation is what “Bones” was looking for unification. Since last November, both Aspinall and the UFC 265-pound champ have been hinting that active negotiations are going on for it. Yesterday, Jones started a storm with a 24-hour announcement tease, billing himself “#AndStill”! Now, he shed light on it:

While this may not be a traditional fight for me, it’s obvious that too many Americans are being hurt and forced into medical debt or bankruptcy by a Healthcare System so greedy that hospitals and insurers hide their actual prices so they can charge us whatever they want…I’ve seen it countless times in my own community where I have friends, family, and neighbors who are afraid to even get the care they need because the entire system, without real prices upfront, is dishonest and rigged…Time to hold these healthcare bullies accountable. Power to the people… Power to the Patients.

He initially refused title unification vs. Aspinall in the lead-up to UFC 309. However, Jones pivoted after winning his maiden defense and hinted ‘Never say never’. Jones remains unbooked despite expressing optimism for a deal with the UFC to return to the Octagon later this year. However, it’s the curious case of Aspinall that’s irking fans. Given how dominant the Brit is, fans consider him a perfect all-around deterrent to Jones.

Aspinall defended the interim heavyweight belt at UFC 304 in a rare scenario. He is now growing increasingly frustrated with GOAT’s absence and a heavyweight logjam. As is the fanbase. Jones’ cause is noble, but fans have their own thoughts on it.

Fight fans react to Jon Jones’ tease not being about unification

This Thursday, ‘Power to the Patients’ announced a brand partnership with UFC heavyweight champ Jon Jones. “Bones” joins the fight for more affordable and accessible healthcare through price transparency across the system.

It’s a noble cause that would battle the medical debts of hundreds of millions of Americans. Pricing protects people from these overcharges. Prices allow patients to choose between $300 and $3,000 for MRIs or $19,000 and $168,000 for knee replacements.

However, there’s a difference between the average Joe and the average UFC fight grind-loving ‘Joe’! The latter kind isn’t happy that this Jones tease wasn’t a title unification news against Aspinall. Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) saved company face and subbed in quick when Jones was out. However, the GOAT fighter dismissed him all through last year. Now, here is how fight fans feel:

Many have lauded the effort. But all agree it’s a classic case of the GOAT dodging the Englishman. “Ruined my day,” one responded to Jones’ announcement. While others billed that Aspinall was right, he’d retire Jones even without fighting. A handful joked about when Aspinall joined the healthcare industry. Others have quipped that it’s at least not a meme coin or crypto link hack. All in all, something positive came out of this, but not for UFC fans awaiting a unification superfight.
