Since its foundation in November 1993, the UFC has seen its fair share of great and dominant fighters. However, there haven’t been many fighters who reached superstar status on a global level. This was not the case for former double champion Jon Jones, who was able to cement himself among the GOATs. However, fellow double champion and former rival Daniel Cormier did not share the same thought.

Cormier was recently seen talking to former American football tight end Shannon Sharpe on ‘Club Shay Shay,’ which is a podcast hosted by the former NFL player. DC was seen naming his UFC Mount Rushmore and incorporated fighters such as Demetrious Johnson, Georges St-Pierre, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

However, Cormier was left confused while naming his fourth pick. Sharpe suggested the former middleweight champion and legend, Anderson Silva. Despite the suggestion, DC believed that Silva and Jon Jones do not deserve to be on the pedestal due to their history of steroid use. However, Jones took to X to give an intense reply to his former rival.

A lifetime of loss, victories and sacrifice and this guy wants to write it all off as steroids. Honestly, it’s insulting. But I can’t help but laugh, knowing it was God given abilities that made him feel so inferior.

Jones also further highlighted his accomplishments in the MMA world. These included his National Junior College wrestling championship and his record as the youngest UFC champion. However, Cormier went on to pick former champion and lightweight legend Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture as his fourth and final picks.

The rivalry between Jones and DC was fueled by mutual hatred and dismay. However, the rivalry intensified ever since their fight in 2017 was overturned to a no-contest due to Jones testing positive for anabolic steroid use. Despite the bitterness the two hold for each other, there have also been some rare moments of respect and gratitude between the former nemeses.

Their feud was one of the most iconic and hatred-filled rivalries in UFC history. In contrast to Cormier’s reputation as a disciplined competitor and role model, Jones’ dominance was tainted by controversies and suspension. However, this created a narrative that attracted fans beyond victories and defeats.

Daniel Cormier talks about how Jon Jones steroid use affected their second fight at UFC 214

Cormier has always been outspoken regarding his resentment of steroid use in combat sports. This comes from his career of discipline, wrestling pedigree, and clean competition. Cormier often expressed frustration over sharing the cage with opponents who failed drug tests, particularly due to his UFC 214 loss to Jon Jones, which was his first-ever knockout loss in the UFC.

DC elaborated on his UFC 214 loss while speaking to Shannon Sharpe. The former double champion revealed that he snubbed out ‘Bones’ from the GOAT conversation due to steroids helping out fighters in endurance, strength, speed, and most importantly, recovery ability. However, DC also spoke about how steroid use made Jones the victor in their second fight.

I was the best I could ever be, 36, and he was 28, and he was in his prime. That’s the fight that he positive and they made it a no-contest. He was able to keep up with me workwise but he exceeded.

However, Cormier also termed ‘Bones’ as the “greatest talent the sport has ever seen” and believed that Jones would be a perfect fighter to fight on the UFC White House event to represent American fighters. DC also revealed that fighters were taking steroids since way before the UFC started testing fighters. However, he also spoke about how fighters had learned to dodge the testing comissions.

Cormier’s persistent disapproval of steroid usage eventually became part of his legacy, distinguishing him from others whose accomplishments were tainted by scandal. By regularly speaking out against PEDs, he established himself not just as a champion inside the Octagon but also as a voice of integrity for the sport.
