Former Masters champion Jordan Spieth had some strong words towards the Augusta National golf club on Saturday. The 2015 winner voiced his frustrations regarding the rules of the course with one of them being not allowed to talk about mud balls.
Mud balls in golf refer to situations when the balls catch some mud or dirt after landing in a wet or soft fairway. On Saturday, Spieth experienced this too many times as his golf balls got some dirt. As a result of mud balls, iron shots become a bit unpredictable for golfers.
While this is not something uncommon in golf, the Augusta National has some rules. Players are not allowed to speak on this matter. Despite this, Spieth voiced his frustration regarding them on Saturday and made his feelings known.
My iron play killed me the last two days and to be brutally honest with you, it was primarily mud balls. It’s just so frustrating because you can’t talk about them here. You’re not supposed to talk about them. Mud balls can affect this tournament significantly, especially when you get them a lot on 11 and 13. They’re just daggers on those two holes.
Jordan Spieth said in the press conference

Spieth is not the only one who has complained about this. In 2009, Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia also voiced his frustration regarding this rule. He would later apologize for his comments.
Speaking about Spieth, he had a good round on Saturday. He finished the third round of the Masters Tournament while being 3-under for the day. This saw him rise in the leaderboard and finish the day while being T21, 1-under for the event.
Social media reacts to Jordan Spieth’s outburst regarding rules of Augusta National
The Augusta National Golf Course, home of the Masters Tournament, is known for its traditions. The course has some strict rules, like no cell phones and calling the fans “patrons“. One of them is the mud ball situations. Golfers are not allowed to speak on this matter, as the organizers fiercely try to protect their hallowed turf. Jordan Spieth speaking on this matter caused an uproar among the fans on social media.

The fans though, were upset regarding his performances. Many of them labeled this an an ‘excuse’ from him and slammed him on X. One user wrote, “I am growing tired of his indecisiveness, complaining, and excuses” while reacting to this development.
Check out that and some other reactions from X below:
I am growing tired of his indecisiveness, complaining, and excuses. He is often in featured group coverage and I find myself steering away from him if I can.

It’s a bummer for him because no one else is having to play the same course and same conditions.

He always seems like he’s whining about something

It’s not a good look
If it affects all golfers, what is the point talking about it. SMH.

Is that why he hasn’t won a tournament in a thousand years?

Dude is such a whiney bitch. Does this guy get mud balls in every tournament. Fucking excuses all the time. Dude STFU and play golf, have fun. Made millions and now acts like a diva. Constantly crying after every shot. So hard to watch

Mud matters. And if you’re censored, that’s bullshit and needs to come out.
— Choppodong (@Choppodong1) April 12, 2025
However if you’re the only one talking… you’re definitely going to look like a whiny bitch.
Take your L and walk out with your head high.

Did everyone have mud balls, blue balls, or whatever? Right. Adjust the bounce and go
Spieth was also seen trying to control his anger during the Masters Tournament. After mishitting a shot during the event, he almost smashed his club. He would sit down on the grass and think of hitting his club down on the grass. However, he stopped midway, controlled his anger, and continued to play the game.
How is the Masters Tournament shaping up after Round 3?
After two days of excitement, the playing field of the Masters Tournament was reduced to half through the cut. While some of the big names departed home early, there were some who made strong jumps during the moving day on Saturday.

One of the biggest storylines of Sunday is around Rory McIlroy. After a disappointing end to Round 1, the golfer bounced back to contention after scores of 66 in Round 2 and 3. He will enter the final round as the 54-hole leader and look to end his major drought and finally claim the green jacket and complete the career grand slam as well.
Bryson DeChambeau is right up on his heels and will be looking to once again break the heart of McIlroy. The LIV Golfer made a dramatic comeback in the U.S. Open last year and snatched the title from McIlroy’s grip.
Meanwhile, defending champion Scottie Scheffler has a huge mountain to climb to retain his title. The World No.1 finished even par for the round and is T6th along with Jason Day, Justin Rose, and Shane Lowry, 7 shots behind McIlroy.
