In Short
  • Ronda Rousey has criticized UFC management and fighter compensation, sparking controversy.
  • Jorge Masvidal accused Rousey of disrespecting Dana White, who played a key role in her career.
  • Rousey's comments reflect broader concerns in the MMA community about corporate priorities over fighter welfare.

Ronda Rousey went from the poster girl of the UFC to one of its harshest critics after her last fight in 2016. Since her retirement, the UFC landscape has evolved, expanding globally and introducing new talent. Her recent demeaning comments about the promotion surprised many. Former UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal criticized Rousey, accusing the former champion of cursing the hand that once fed her.

Rousey was the first female signed to the UFC and became the promotion’s first female champion. She dominated the bantamweight division and helped elevate women’s MMA globally. However, as she prepares to return against Gina Carano under the MVP banner in May 2026, she has criticized UFC fighter compensation. Her comments highlight ongoing concerns about treatment and pay in the UFC.

Masvidal has remained out of the UFC since April 2023, when he lost to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. Since then, he has stayed active outside the cage, launching his own MMA promotion and maintaining a strong social media presence. He recently questioned Rousey’s appearance and criticized her comments about the UFC.

Her eyes, bro, her nose, her teeth, like what type of demonology is she on, bro? This is spooky, man. I know Ronda was a hell of a fighter at one point, but she looks spooky. I saw that interview, and I was spooked out. I don’t know what’s going on with Ronda. But Ronda’s never been the best on the mic, to tell you the truth. She just says things that are weird. Her taking shots at Dana, it’s like, Dana made you. Dana literally hand-walked you into the league and opened a lot of doors for you.

Rousey’s recent comments came after UFC CEO Dana White announced the UFC White House event during the UFC 326 broadcast. The card, named UFC Freedom Fights 250, faced intense scrutiny due to its underwhelming lineup. Rousey reflected this in her remarks, questioning the quality and appeal of the matchups. She suggested the UFC prioritizes shareholder interests over what fans actually want.

Interestingly, Masvidal has also had issues with UFC top brass, feeling underappreciated at times. However, he has never had major problems with White personally. The CEO maintains a strict, intolerant stance against fighter brawls and altercations outside the cage. Yet when Masvidal assaulted Colby Covington in Miami in 2022, White believed Covington had it coming and understood Masvidal’s viewpoint.

The relationship between early Rousey and her current stance on the UFC is sharply contrasting. While Dana White has always hailed Rousey as one of the greatest fighters in the cage, her recent comments weaken that legacy. She has directly criticized the management and promotion practices. By taking aim at White’s multibillion‑dollar empire, Ronda Rousey has sparked renewed debate over her role in MMA.

Ronda Rousey talks about why the Paramount+ deal is not feasible for the UFC

The UFC signed a seven‑year, $7.7 billion deal with Paramount+, making it the exclusive US home for all numbered events and Fight Nights. UFC 324, held January 24, 2026, at T‑Mobile Arena, was the first event under the new deal and streamed exclusively on Paramount+. The agreement removed traditional PPV charges for subscribers and expanded international distribution.

However, many in the MMA community believe the UFC is treading carefully, increasingly restricting what fighters can say publicly. Ronda Rousey recently criticized the Paramount+ deal, stating it could disadvantage fighters. She argued the promotion is now largely guided by shareholder interests rather than athlete welfare. Her remarks reflect growing concern over how corporate priorities may limit fighter influence.

UFC made a huge mistake going with Paramount and just taking the biggest check because the UFC thinks they are too big to fail, and they won’t. They think they are the biggest fish in town, but somebody is going to come and fill their void. MVP is there to take the risk, and honestly, there is not much of a risk. I really hope the UFC sees the writing on the wall and they are going to lose their market share of the sport if they don’t start prioritizing fighters.

Rousey echoed concerns shared by many in the MMA community that Dana White may be losing interest in MMA. She noted that White has achieved nearly everything in the sport and is now expanding into ventures such as PowerSlap and Zuffa Boxing. According to Rousey, these side projects are creating challenges for the UFC. Her remarks underscore worries that White’s focus may be shifting from the promotion he helped build.
