IPL 2021: “Lots of players want to follow his footsteps” – Jos Buttler speaks on the impact of MS Dhoni on emergence of wicket-keeper captains
Jos Buttler and MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni has been one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His excellent record as the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) only captain over the course of the tournament’s history, coupled with his achievements in international cricket has made him a revered figure in the world. A plethora of overseas players have expressed their admiration for the former Indian captain.
The latest to do so is England and Rajasthan Royals (RR) batsman Jos Buttler who spoke about the impact that Dhoni has had in the IPL and how it has led to a whole lot of wicket-keeper captains to emerge in cricket and the IPL in particular.
Jos Buttler speaks on MS Dhoni’s influence
Jos Buttler spoke to PTI today about the impact that MS Dhoni has had in the IPL and said, “I am sure MSD (Dhoni) has something to do with the sixth sense and breeding of wicketkeepers who can captain. He obviously has been a fantastic captain and there are lots of players who want to follow his footsteps.”
It is noteworthy that four of the ongoing IPL’s eight captains are wicket-keeper as well – MS Dhoni, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. Speaking about it, “I think a wicketkeeper has a brilliant view of the game. That can add to your decision making as you can see first-hand how the wicket is behaving and the way bowlers are bowling,” he said.
Speaking about the RR team this year, Buttler said, “We have lots of variety in the team this season with some world-class all-rounders like Ben Stokes and Chris Morris and a new captain. Sanju (Samson) is very exciting player and has a long affiliation with the franchise. He is a very calm person and likes to have fun. I am sure he would try and get across that to the team. There will be a lot of passion in his leadership. I strongly believe Ben Stokes will be the X-factor for our team in this season.”
RR will open their IPL campaign tomorrow against the Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.
