Jose Mourinho accused his big name Tottenham players of hiding in the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal. Arsenal came from behind to win the match with the goals coming from Martin Odegaard and a penalty from Lacazette in the 2nd half.

Spurs went ahead at the Emirates thanks to a stunning rabona finish from Erik Lamela in a half which was largely dominated by Arsenal. The goal wasn’t a fair result of the performance put up by Arsenal as Tottenham failed to get a hold of the match.

Mourinho was critical of Micheal Oliver’s decision to hand Arsenal a penalty

Tottenham were abject and passive for much of the match, with Harry Kane not touching the ball in the opposition half until the final embers while Gareth Bale was subbed off, and Mourinho felt some players went missing.

“We were poor,” he said of the opening 45 minutes. “Defending bad, no intensity, no pressing. In terms of attacking football, some important players hiding. Really bad.”

Mourinho maintained he was “not pointing the finger at player A, B or C” but criticised “people hiding, not showing themselves, no intensity, no passing and moving”.

Asked specifically about Bale, he said: “Gareth and Tanguy, we need more intensity in our game. We need to press more, be more intense in the game.” Lacazette scored from the spot shortly after those changes were made.

Mourinho was also critical of the penalty decision awarded by Michael Oliver and his VAR team Paul Tierney and made his feelings heard in his post-match press conference.

“I don’t want to call it a penalty because it’s an offence to penalties,” he said. “If somebody has a different opinion it has to be one of the big Arsenal fans with a season ticket; it is the only one I accept as it is the passion speaking. Other than that I don’t accept a different view as it is obvious.”
