The overpowering athleticism of Tom Aspinall in the heavyweight division gets critiqued by the controversial Josh Hokit.

Josh Hokit has emerged as the UFC’s top breakout talent in 2026. The fast-paced rise to the top 5 of the heavyweight division came due to his ability to fight and promote himself. Top fighters like Alex Pereira, Jiri Prochazka, Derrick Lewis, and Curtis Lewis all had to hear Hokit talk trash and create viral moments.
UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall recently became the latest fighter to be targeted by Hokit on social media. Aspinall hasn’t fought since UFC 321 where Ciryl Gane poked his eye, and rendered him unable to continue fighting. Following Gane’s TKO win over Pereira at UFC Freedom 250, Aspinall will likely face the Frenchman next.
Hokit will need another opponent to face in the meantime till Aspinall and Gane settles their rivalry. However, that didn’t stop Hokit from criticizing the British fighter.
The American heavyweight went on X and reacted to the clip of Aspinall swiftly overpowering Alexander Volkov. Hokit didn’t hold back and downplayed the athleticism of the heavyweight champion.
He’s too offensive minded… that makes things exciting until a proper athlete is able to compete with his athleticism.. his strength is also his weakness.

If Sean survives the first round and gauges distance and timing.. he wins this fight.. https://t.co/oh7a03BuGI

The “proper athlete” mentioned in the tweet is likely Hokit himself. After all, the American heavyweight played football back in high school and college. During his college football career, Hokit played in multiple positions, and many consider him as a legitimate athletic heavyweight.
So far in the UFC, Hokit has shown good versatility, showcasing his ability to strike as well as wrestle. This combination is very rare in the current heavyweight division of the UFC. Fighters like Gane, Pereira, Lewis, and Volkov only excel in one aspect. As such, Hokit considers himself as the better athlete.
Despite the triggering comments from Hokit, Aspinall has not responded to the tweet. His current motivation is returning back to the octagon.
The British fighter took a long time before getting cleared to compete in training sessions following his eye surgeries. As such, it may even take till 2027 before Hokit vs Aspinall comes to fruition.
Josh Hokit plays matchmaker in the heavyweight division
The heavyweight division will see a title unification bout between Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane later this year. Other heavyweights like Hokit, Pereira, Volkov, and Blaydes has no opponent booked at the moment.

Dana White and the UFC brass has a tough task ahead of them to make the heavyweight division exciting again. Apart from talking trash to other heavyweights, Hokit has offered his thoughts on what the UFC should do next.
After finding out the social media activities of Alex Pereira taking shots at referee Herb Dean, Hokit offered some matchmaking ideas.
This crybaby has lost all of his aura. Here’s an idea @ufc. Cut Tom. Ciryl is the undisputed champ anyways IMO. He made Tom quit. Tom’s manager is trying to play games. Give me Ciryl in September and when I win I will give @AlexPereira a chance to get his self esteem back in Nov/Dec. At least then we will have a champ that is down to fight all of the time.

Hokit has so far indicated that he wants to be an active fighter in the promotion. The former San Francisco 49ers practice squad member recently told Ariel Helwani that he intends to fight two more times. If that happens, it will make him the most active heavyweight of 2026.
Regardless of the intriguing matchmaking plans given by Hokit, Aspinall won’t be cut by the promotion. The title unification bout will happen sometime later this year. It could even happen in France, which is Gane’s nation.
As for the other part of Hokit’s tweet, a bout against Alex Pereira could become one of the most anticipated fights in the heavyweight division. Nevertheless, Dana White and the UFC brass has the final say on the matter.
