Juan Carlos Ferrero will no longer be coaching Carlos Alcaraz as they have split, ending their seven-year partnership. Alcaraz started to work with Ferrero in 2018 when he was just 15.
The following season, Alcaraz hired the 2003 French Open champion as his coach, which went on to become one of the most successful coaching partnerships in tennis history. Ferrero guided the 22-year-old to 24 tour-level titles, six of which were Grand Slam ones. Under him, the Spanish tennis ace also reached the World No.1 ranking.
The split greatly astonished the tennis community as they, for sure, had not at all anticipated it happening at least this year. Though there were rumors of disagreements between Ferrero and Alcaraz’s camp, but that they would split after Alcaraz’s most successful season sparked debate and discussions about the possible reasons behind the breakup.
Now, days after the separation, Ferrero’s team took to Instagram story to post a message for Alcaraz and his coach, Samuel Lopez, who joined the player’s team last December and worked alongside Ferrero. “Vamos Charly & Samu,” Ferrero’s coaching academy’s Instagram handle shared as a story.

Lopez is expected to become Alcaraz’s head coach. Along with Ferrero, Lopez also won the ATP Coach of the Year award this season. Ferrero was first awarded the same in 2022 after he guided Alcaraz to his first Grand Slam title at the US Open, following which, the now six-time Major champion became the youngest man in the Open Era to become a World No.1 player.
Patrick Mouratoglou says tennis is lucky to have the Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner rivalry
Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, is in awe of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, both of whom have been dominating on the tour since the 2024 season, having won a combined 26 titles from 35 finals, including the last eight Grand Slam trophies. Mouratoglou thinks tennis is lucky to have these two players.

Sinner and Alcaraz. What a rivalry, because those guys are so close, because they are so dominant, because they play such amazing tennis. We are lucky to have those two. Of course, we remember the trio with Novak, Roger and Rafa. It’s a duo this time, but what they’ve done this year, and this is what I want to talk about, is unbelievable.
Patrick Mouratoglou said on Instagram
This year, the World No.1 and the World No.2 clashed with each other six times (all in the finals), with the former winning on four occasions. After defeating the Italian at the Italian Open, Alcaraz eked out a five-set win at the French Open, but not before overcoming a two-set deficit and saving three match points in the fourth set.
Alcaraz denied Sinner his second consecutive Cincinnati Masters and US Open titles. The latter denied Alcaraz a three-peat at Wimbledon and later defended his ATP Finals crown.
They played for the first time in history three Grand Slam finals in a row in a single year. This simply never happened in the history of our game. Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open, and on top of it, they played the final of the ATP finals.
Patrick Mouratoglou added
Sinner will once again meet Alcaraz next year, but at the Hyundai Card Super Match exhibition in Incheon, South Korea. The match is scheduled to be held on January 10, just a few days before the start of the Australian Open (January 18).
The four-time Grand Slam champion will be aiming for the three-peat in Melbourne, while Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam. Alcaraz has never reached the semifinal of the first Major of the season.
