Juan Martin del Potro visited the Caja Magica during the ongoing Mutua Madrid Open. The former World No.3, during an interview, discussed many important things, like his retirement, Rafael Nadal‘s retirement, and the rivalry between the young talents-Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
Del Potro heaped praise on Alcaraz by saying that the 20-year-old plays a bit like a 30-year-old as if he has been on the circuit for a long time and played a lot of tennis. He pointed out that an era is going to end after Nadal’s retirement, and feels the rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner will be good for tennis.
It's going to be very good for tennis, that face-to-face against Sinner. He is going to build a rivalry that tennis constantly had. First it was Agassi-Sampras, then Roger-Rafa, then Novak. And now it will be the two of them.Juan Martin del Potro siad (via Punto de Break)
Alcaraz and Sinner are currently participating in the Madrid Open. Alcaraz reached the Round of 16 after victories over Alexander Shevchenko and Thiago Seyboth Wild in the previous rounds. On the other hand, Sinner defeated Lorenzo Sonego in his first-round match.
Alcaraz’s only title this season came at Indian Wells, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev. Sinner is eyeing his fourth title of the season, having previously won the Australian Open, ATP Rotterdam, and the Miami Open.
He last played at the Monte Carlo Masters, where Stefanos Tsitsipas knocked him out in the semi-finals. Alcaraz withdrew his name from the Monte Carlo Masters due to injury.
Juan Martin del Potro says Carlos Alcaraz is always compared to Rafael Nadal in Spain
Rafael Nadal, 37, is still a force to be reckoned with on clay courts. No one has won more titles than Nadal when it comes to the red dirt.
However, the tennis fraternity likes to compare Carlos Alcaraz to compatriot Nadal because the former has already displayed his power on the surface. And likewise, Juan Martin del Potro thinks Spanish people love to compare Alcaraz to Nadal.
Here in Spain, Carlitos is always compared to Rafa. I like that Pedro Cachín can play against Rafa. Also see Cerúndolo, Etcheverry, Baez. There will be a lot that will be fighting there for many years.Juan Martin del Potro said
The former Argentine player retired in 2022 after his constant battle with wrist and knee injuries. He has won one Grand Slam title-the 2009 US Open, by beating Roger Federer in the final.
