The Tampa Bay Rays are heading to the 2026 postseason. On Friday, the American League East became the first team to punch its ticket for the playoffs following a walk-off win against the Houston Astros. Junior Caminero, who hit the walk-off home run, channeled his inner LeBron James and sent a message to the Rays fans.
When the season started, the Rays were not one of the favorites in their division. The last two seasons have not been good ones for them. After losing in the American League Wild Card Series in 2023 against the Texas Rangers, they missed the postseason in 2024 and 2025, finishing 4th on both occasions.
With the Toronto Blue Jays finishing as runners-up last year, they, along with the New York Yankees, were expected to be in the race for the division once again. The Rays were not seen as a team that could make a deep run.
However, the Rays have stunned everyone. Their consistently strong performances this season propelled them to the top of the AL East division ahead of the Yankees. On Friday, they had to come back from 1-0 down to win.
After falling behind in the 4th inning, the Rays tied the game in the 5th inning with a solo home run from Victor Mesa Jr. to right-center field.

3 straight games with a HR. That’s his 13th in 66 games, a 30+ HR pace over a full season. Pair that with elite defense and some speed, we’re talking about a very good player at 25 years old. pic.twitter.com/wJTlfilW2L
The highlight moment fittingly belonged to Caminero, who has been the top star for the Rays. In the 9th inning, he stepped up to the plate after Bryan Abreu gave up a double to Jonathan Aranda.
The 23-year-old crushed a 2-run home run to left-center field on the first pitch he saw. This saw the Rays win 3-1 and walk off the Astros. With an 88-59 record, they became the first team across the entire league to clinch a postseason berth.

This was Caminero’s 40th home run of the season. After his first career walk-off home run, he was asked about his thoughts regarding the team and the season. Initially, he answered the questions through his interpreter.
Later, he took the microphone from the hands of Ryan Bass and shouted, “Tampa, this is for you,” while channeling his inner LeBron James.

For the unversed, James had a similar quote 10 years ago when the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled off an incredible comeback in the NBA Finals to beat Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. After the Cavs came back from 3-1 down to win the series 4-3, an emotional James shouted, “Cleveland, this is for you.”
Junior Caminero becomes 2nd youngest player with back-to-back 40-home-run seasons
Junior Caminero’s 40th home run of the 2026 season saw the Tampa Bay Rays clinch the playoffs for the first time since 2023. With that home run, he also became the 2nd-youngest player in MLB history with back-to-back 40-home-run seasons.

Last season, Caminero hit 45 home runs and had 110 RBIs in 154 games. He was one of the bright stars in a dark season for the Rays in 2025.
The 23-year-old has continued that form and reached the 40-home-run mark once again. As per Elias Sports Bureau, at 23 years and 68 days, he is the second-youngest player in MLB to hit 40 home runs or more in back-to-back seasons. Hall of Famer Eddie Matthews is the youngest on this list at 22 years and 347 days.

For Caminero and the Rays, their next focus is to win the division. As of Friday, they hold a 3-game lead over the 2nd-place Yankees, who are 85-62 for the season with their win over the New York Mets. The two division rivals will face each other in a 4-game set in their penultimate series of the year.
