Cam Schlittler has been on fire this season. In his first full campaign, the right-handed pitcher has found himself in the mix for the American League Cy Young Award. A New York Yankees broadcaster believes he is having the team’s best pitching season in nearly 50 years.

This past Tuesday, Schlittler was on the mound for the Yankees as they took on the struggling Colorado Rockies. The NL West had no answers for him.

He threw 7 strong innings, picked up 10 strikeouts, and gave up just 3 hits and 1 run. This lowered his season ERA to 2.01 in 30 starts and improved his record to 13-6.

As per Sarah Langs of MLB.com, this was his 20th start allowing 1 or 0 runs in the season. Before him, the most starts any pitcher had in Yankees history while allowing 1 or 0 runs was Ron Guidry in 1978. The “Gator” had 18 such starts in the 1978 season when the Bronx Bombers won the World Series.

On his ESPN Radio Show, Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay was full of praise for Schlittler. He drew parallels to Guidry’s season in 1978 and claimed that this was the best pitching season the Yankees have had in nearly 50 years.

He has been an absolute star. This might be the best Yankees season for a pitcher, a starting pitcher, since Ron Guidry in 1978, when he had a 1.74 ERA. That’s how great he’s been.

With a fWAR of 5.7, he has already surpassed the fWAR of Gerrit Cole (5.3) from the 2023 season, when he won the American League Cy Young Award.

If Schlittler does win the Cy Young Award later this year, he will become just the 7th pitcher in Yankees history to claim this honor.

The star is none other than current NBA Champion Josh Hart. The New York Knicks No.3 is a fan of the Yankees and has often shared his thoughts on X.

After his recent start, the 31-year-old once again praised him. While sharing a 4-word message, Hart lauded Schlittler and called him cold.

In June, Hart had called for Schlittler to be the Cy Young Award winner. This came after the pitcher picked up 13 strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds.

His 2.01 ERA is the second-lowest across the entire league. Only Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers has a better ERA (1.95) than the Yankees star.

While “the Miz” is considered the favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award, Schlittler has found himself battling Toronto Blue Jays star Dylan Cease for the American League Cy Young Award.

For now, he will turn his attention towards the regular season and look to finish it strongly. His next start will be against the New York Mets on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
