It appears head coach Mike Tomlin is having quite a tough time deciding on the team’s starting quarterback between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Though the former was favored for the position initially, his performance in the preseason games put Tomlin in a dilemma once again.
With less than a month remaining from the beginning of the 2024 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have the urgency to handle the starting position. While Wilson knows his performance hasn’t been up to his veteran standards, Fields claimed he has shown the team that he is capable of handling and taking up the responsibilities of that position.
I think I've shown what I can do. I think the time that I did have with the [first team] practicing in training camp, I think that went well. I think we grew a lot each and every day, but at the end of the day, it's not up to me.Justin Fields said on Thrusday, via ESPN staff writer Brooker Pryor
Fields further stated that he would continue making the efforts as before and be a leader to the team, even if head coach Tomlin didn’t go with him as the first choice. He knows that, sooner or later, his hard work and dedication will certainly pay off.
Even though veteran quarterback Wilson is in the “pole position” to earn the starting job, Fields hasn’t lost hope as Tomlin hasn’t made the starting quarterback of Week 1 of the coming season.
Justin Fields’ role unclear amid Steelers’ offensive woes
With Wilson named to start the preseason finale game despite his bizarre performance, the former Chicago Bears’ signal-caller was asked whether he would get to be on the field against the Detroit Lions. However, he dodged the question asserting he focuses on things he can control.
I try to just think about the stuff that I can control, so I can't control whether or not I'm going to be named the starter. I can control how I come in every day, how I work every day, and how I treat my teammates and every day.Justin Fields said
At present, neither Wilson nor Fields have seemingly impressed head coach Tomlin, as he wants his quarterbacks to play like they did during the practice drills. Regardless of how many series they played in the preseason, the Steelers haven’t scored any points in the eight preseason series.
