Justin Gaethje recently engaged in a brutal war against Rafael Fiziev in the co-main event of UFC 313. The fight went the full five rounds, with the ‘Highlight’ securing a unanimous decision victory. However, Gaethje later revealed on social media that he sustained a few unusual injuries during the battle.
Gaethje was initially scheduled to fight top lightweight Dan Hooker. However, the Kiwi fighter had to pull out due to an injury. In the desperate situation, Fiziev came in as a short notice substitute. It was an incredibly entertaining bout, but Gaethje had to pay a small price for the victory.
This is from dragging my feet on the canvas when I throw punches. You do not want to be an ultimate fighter.

Gaethje is known for his devastating power, capable of dropping even the toughest fighters in the division. The legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov once described Gaethje as someone who ‘hits like a truck,’ a reputation he’s upheld throughout his career. With 20 knockout wins in 31 professional fights, his finishing ability is nothing short of impressive.

Gaethje also has some of the nastiest kicks in the sport, and Fiziev got the taste of it all at UFC 313. Despite fighting for 30 minutes inside the octagon, the mutual respect between both fighters was wholesome to watch. Now after the win, Gaethje is laser focused on getting a title shot next.
Justin Gaethje might get a title shot next?
Justin Gaethje recently made a tweet demanding UFC CEO Dana White for a title shot. According to the American fighter, he had a two-fight win streak before his devastating loss against Max Holloway at UFC 300. He mentioned that with the drama going on in the lightweight division, he deserves the shot more than anybody.

Gaethje is currently 36 years old and might have two more fights left in his tank. On top of that, he’s the only fighter in the rankings who hasn’t faced the champion Islam Makhachev. While discussing this on his YouTube channel, top journalist Mike Bohn shared a unique perspective.
For some reason, I feel like Gaethje might get [the next lightweight title shot]. It’s kind of like the Dustin Poirier thing, right? Like, the last chance. He’s kind of 36 years old, so the timing may not work out for it again….So I could see Justin get it. That’s probably the ingredient for the most exciting fight out of all three.

Last year at UFC 302, Dustin Poirier also got a title shot being in a similar situation as Gaethje. The ‘Diamond’ lost the opportunity and then announced his temporary retirement. For the ‘Highlight’, this could be his last shot at the UFC gold, and he’s motivated to make the most out of it.
Can Justin Gaethje become a lightweight champion?
Justin Gaethje has always been an aggressive striker and pressures opponents relentlessly, forcing wild exchanges. Despite having a wrestling background, he rarely uses offensive takedowns. Instead, he relies on strong takedown defense to keep fights standing.

Gaethje’s durability allows him to absorb damage while delivering powerful counterstrikes. He excels in controlled chaos, overwhelming opponents with pace and volume. While his fighting style is explosive, going against a submission specialist like Islam Makhachev will be quite difficult. Some fight fans believe the same thing, and don’t want to see this fight for the exact reason.
The Dagestani is a complete fighter and has several tools to take someone down and finish him via submission. If Gaethje gets an opportunity, he will have to fight in contrast to his natural style. Nevertheless, the chances of him winning the belt is still low. However, in the world of MMA, anything can happen.
