‘We might be fighting next week’ – Kamaru Usman in a recent conversation with Ali Abdelaziz

Kamaru Usman
Kamaru Usman defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261 with a big right hand. The win handed Masvidal his first knockout defeat in his UFC career. The fight ended in the second round, with Usman not having to put in that much effort.
A few days after Usman defended his welterweight title, Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards – a bout which might potentially see the winner fight Usman, saw Diaz pulling out. Just when people were thinking who would replace Diaz, ‘The Stockton Slugger’ confirmed that he would face Edwards a month later.
‘Are you kidding me’ – Ali Abdelaziz to Kamaru Usman
Usman recently revealed in an interview with Brett Okamoto that he had thought of replacing Diaz, and take on Edwards, before it was announced that the two would fight at UFC 263, instead of UFC 262. He revealed that he had called up his manager Ali Abdelaziz and shocked him.
Usman was quoted as saying, “I’m crazy in the sense to where as soon as I heard about (Diaz’s withdrawal), I just landed here in Atlantic City for my brother’s fight. And I’m quarantined in my room. And I hear about it. And I look around, and I look in the bathroom.“
Usman continued, “So I pick up the phone, and I speak with my manager Ali, and I tell him, ‘Hey…” and he already knew what I was gonna say… I’m like, ‘Hey, I need to check my weight, and I’mma go put in some rounds in the morning. And depending on how I feel, we might be fighting next week. And he goes, ‘Are you kidding me?’ And I’m like, ‘Nah, we might be fighting next week.’”
Who’s next for Kamaru Usman?
Usman is largely expected to face the winner of Leon Edwards and Nate Diaz, as he himself revealed that he was really interested in fighting the either of the two. Usman has already faced Edwards once, when he made his UFC debut. The Nigerian Nightmare won via. unanimous decision.
Another opponent might be Colby Covington. However, Usman recently claimed that Covington has done nothing to deserve a rematch against him.
