Ahead of the 2025 NASCAR Cup season, the sanctioning body made some small yet serious changes to the rule book. They have introduced a new waiver rule, that some label as the ‘Kyle Larson rule.’ The eligibility for the waiver has been made more stricter, following the controversy around Kyle Larson getting waiver despite missing the Coke 600, after delay in the Indy 500 during double duty.

2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick shared his feelings about the new rule change in the latest episode of the Happy Hour podcast. The veteran seems to dislike the waiver rules as a whole. He exclaimed how the rule change was made to punish racer like Kyle Larson who might races owing to other priorities.

Yeah so they left the part in there that the waiver was meant for and they basically said, ‘Hey, Kyle Larson, don’t miss my race anymore. If you miss my race now you’re going to be punished because now I have a rule in the rulebook that will deter you from staying in Indy.’

Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.

Further talking on the point Harvick shared his belief that a win should necessarily get you into the playoffs and the waiver rules are there just for the sake of it. He sees this change as part of NASCAR marketing it turfs to make sure anything like the Kyle Larson-Coke 600 drama would ever happen in the sport.

It is a big change. And I think, look, I’m of the (opinion the) win is the waiver. I’m still in that category. I just don’t like rules just to have rules. I think that NASCAR has to protect its turf. They did last year with Larson.

Kevin Harvick added.

In the same podcast later, Kevin Harvick shared his feelings about how much Kyle Larson has paid for his decision to miss the Coke 600. He asserted that the points missed from Charllotte cost him the regular season championship and the playoff points lost, cost him later in the season.

I mean the guy still went on, it was detrimental to him all the way to the end. It penalized him himself. He didn’t win the regular season championship. It kept him out of the end of the year and it penalized Larson all the way through without having a rule. Sometimes maybe we need those committees to go in here and start wiping stuff out.

Kevin Harvick said.

The ex-SHR racer seems to suggest that the absence of waiver is okay, considering Larson couldn’t overcome the points loss from the race. It would be interesting to see how the rule changes are going to affect racers in the 2025 season.
