One of the major factors that has been a point of concern for NASCAR over the last decade is the lack of superstar racers with the level of influence like the legendary drivers Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt had. NASCAR has been working for a long-time change the situation, with recently announcing a driver marketing program.
While talking about the lack of superstar’s debate and the new policies, 2014 Cup series champion Kevin Harvick has explained how he thinks this issue can be solved. He pointed out that the first step of resolution is to make the racers go Infront of the fans more and build a brand around them by having a connection with them, eventually becoming rockstars.
Well, the drivers need to be in front of the fans more, right? I think the one thing that we all talked about as this program was being put together over the last couple of years is, how do we build the drivers’ brands. How do we make them rockstars?
Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.
Further talking about the point, Kevin Harvick he reiterated that the racers should interact more with the fans to become superstars. He then highlighted that how the 2009 financial crisis changed the business as a whole and it is reflecting on the brand value of racers.
Well, the first thing we gotta do is figure out how to get them in front of the people that they need to be in front of to make them rockstars. Because what’s happened in our sport is, since 2009 really and the financial crisis, and everything that we went through; the way that businesses do business is different.

Kevin Harvick reveals the part sponsors played in the driver brand building
The ex-SHR champion recalled the time when the sponsors used to invest more into developing a brad around the drivers. He was able to make a name for himself in the sport because of this support as he got exposure in different media houses around the country. So he is hoping that the new driver incentive program can help them do something similar.

The sponsors really promoted the sport as I was coming through the sport to be able to grow it and make you have a brand because you were exposed to so many things and different news outlets and media outlets across the country. So, I think what this driver incentive program does is it allows the drivers to get creative with their own brand.
Kevin Harvick said.
NASCAR has to make this policy a success in order for the sport to experience proper growth and it would be interesting to see how the whole policy is going to influence the sport. The teams and drivers should also invest more time and resources into building their brand.
