Superspeedways always host the most entertain and chaotic races in NACAR. They often get the most viewership among race fans and has the highest prize purse for the teams. But since the introduction of Next-Gen cars in 2022, the entertainment factor has been in a decline with the fierce battle these were known for getting limited to the final phases of the race.
One of the major reasons for this change was the use if fuel saving strategy by the teams. The teams are running slower in the first two stages of the races with the objective of limiting the pit-stops. Ex-NASCAR Cup champion Kevin Harvick, while talking about the worsening situation after the Talladega Cup race pointed out drastic fixes are needed to sort the situation.
He pointed out that everyone in the NASCAR community has work on a solution that could fix the racing issue ASAP. Harvick highlighted the need of a new package for the Superspeedway races from the 2025 season. He doesn’t seem to be a fan of suggestions such as reducing race length or adding an addition stage to the race.
We were four or five seconds off the pace, and I think everybody knows that we need to start working on something for the superspeedway races, ASAP…I think everybody’s got the package figured out, at this particular point to say, ‘Okay, this is how we race. This is what we do. We save fuel…We’ve going to mix it up way different for next year, from a speedway package, to keep these guys trying to figure it out. I don’t know what that is, but it just needs to be drastically different.Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour Podcast.
Kevin Harvick breaks down the issue with pushing
While talking about the issues that Superspeedway racing, Harvick pointed out the issues with pushing. He said that unlike in the past, pushing isn’t as effective as it used to be as it no longer a bigger difference maker.
I would like everybody to start working on what the solutions are. And those are the things, I don’t like the saving gas. I get that it’s part of it. I don’t like the fact that you can not go anywhere in the middle of the pack, and I don’t like the fact that when you push it doesn’t make a bigger difference in speed.Kevin Harvick said.
The Superspeedway racing needs to be fixed immediately and NASCAR has to make some drastic calls for it. If a new package isn’t the best solution, they could look into adding another mandatory pitstop to races giving teams to put an end to fuel saving runs.
