Former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen, who is currently racing full-time in World Endurance Championship, is set to make a career milestone at San Diego. He is set to race in the inaugural road course race at the iconic Naval Base Coronado, as part of Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 that gave NASCAR Shane van Gisbergen two years ago.
It was an unexpected collaboration many didn’t see coming and as K-Mag wasn’t someone that was known for exploring different motorsport events. Talking about the new chapter of his racing career, the veteran racer admitted that he is beyond excited about getting into the deep end of the sport and being part of one of the biggest challenges in the series’ recent history.
I think just the NASCAR spirit, if you will; driving the car, taking part in the race, seeing my name up on the list with all these other NASCAR legends. For me, it’s a great challenge. It’s a real excitement being thrown in at the deep end. It would be a very big challenge to just hit the ground running, having done no laps in a NASCAR Cup car so far.
Kevin Magnussen said ahead of the San Diego race.
Further talking about the point, Kevin Magnussen shared his thoughts on the track after the morning walk with rest of the garage. He admitted that it felt like the most extreme track he has ever driven and is excited for the opportunity. It comes from a racer that has driven in venues such as Monaco and LeMans.
It’s an awesome track. I walked the track this morning. It looks like the most extreme track that I’ve ever driven. That would be an experience in itself. Just looking forward to it.

Kevin Magnussen never saw himself racing in NASCAR
Further talking about the same point, the former Hass F1 Team driver admitted that he never though he would one day race in the premier stock car racing series. It was because of the fact that his whole racing career were in the European Formula One tracks, that is really isolated from the NASCAR world.

Yeah, I mean, NASCAR is one of the biggest forms of motorsport, so I don’t think I ever thought it would be a possibility because I’ve been on that European Formula 1 track that is very different and isolated from the NASCAR world, so it’s not often you get a chance to actually cross over.
Kevin Magnussen said.
The veteran racer pointed out that he feels like NASCAR is pretty similar and really different from all the motorsport series he has ever been part of over the years. He is hoping to make a memory of a lifetime in the Cup Series this Sunday.
It’s almost like being a soccer player and then taking part in a field game, and I think that’s what it feels like to me. It’s still kind of similar. It’s the same kind of sport, but a very different type of it. So, I think that’s very, very exciting, and I’m just super privileged to get this opportunity to take part in the NASCAR race. It’s going to be a memory for life.
Kevin Magnussen added.
Magnussen has the opportunity to produce the best result by a former F1 driver since Juan Pablo Monataya, as all the Cup drivers have no experience in the San Diego track and he has superior RC racing experience as well. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver on Sunday.
