Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane clashed last weekend in the main event of UFC 321 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The heavyweight title fight took an unfortunate turn when Aspinall was accidentally poked in the eye by the French contender. Unable to continue due to the injury, Aspinall saw the bout declared a no-contest and was rushed to the hospital.

It was certainly not the night that Aspinall and his team had envisioned, as unforeseen circumstances overshadowed their title defence. However, amidst the disappointment, Aspinall’s father, Andy, had a heartfelt moment when he got to meet Khabib Nurmagomedov backstage.

In a touching video, Andy and Nurmagomedov were seen sharing an emotional conversation about their late fathers and shared grief. Andy revealed his father passed away shortly after Nurmagomedov’s father’s death, to which the ‘Eagle’ responded that life’s tragedies are beyond control. The conversation soon turned uplifting as Nurmagomedov encouraged them, reminding them of Tom Aspinall’s lost time.

You guys are the best fight. I know you guys lose last one and half year, because you guys were waiting, waiting, waiting. When you’re on top and you’re losing your best… time never come back.

‘The Eagle’ attended UFC 321 to corner his cousin, Umar Nurmagomedov, who faced Mario Bautista in an intense bantamweight matchup. Umar secured a unanimous decision after three competitive rounds, while Khabib appeared highly animated and vocal from the octagon side.

This crucial win marked Umar’s comeback following his previous title loss to Merab Dvalishvili, where he and Nurmagomedov were disappointed. After the fight, Umar humbly expressed that he constantly strives to emulate Khabib’s discipline, though mastering the former champion’s mindset remains difficult. Apart from coaching Umar,

Nurmagomedov gave Aspinall a last-minute pep talk before the champ went in to fight Gane. However, Aspinall didn’t get the opportunity to do anything much as the fight was stopped in the first round. From the get-go, both Tom Aspinall and Gane looked extremely sharp and traded powerful punches that kept the fans entertained.

Following the accidental eye poke, the champion took sufficient time to recover but continuously complained that he couldn’t see properly. After the disappointing ending, the Abu Dhabi crowd began loudly booing the result, showing their frustration and disbelief. Gane, on the other hand, appeared completely helpless as he lost yet another opportunity to capture the heavyweight title.

Before the fight, Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane promised absolute fireworks, with many predicting a knockout victory for the champion. However, after the controversial ending, the British heavyweight faced harsh criticism from fans and analysts who accused him of quitting too easily. Social media erupted with memes claiming that Aspinall had exaggerated or even faked his eye injury to avoid continuing.

UFC veteran Chael Sonnen criticized Aspinall for not pushing through adversity, insisting the heavyweight champion should have continued fighting regardless. Even UFC CEO Dana White questioned Aspinall’s desire to continue fighting after getting bloodied early by Gane’s striking offense. Nevertheless, Aspinall recently posted his interactions with the doctor following the injury and shared it on his YouTube.

It’s outrageous. He (Ciryl Gane) got warned twice, at least once, for poking. The ref told him to keep his fingers closed. It feels like someone touched the back of my eyeball.

The doctor mentioned that he didn’t find anything dangerous, but backed the decision to stop the fight after the incident. As expected, the incident restarted a long-standing debate between eye pokes in UFC and how to change that. Currently, fans are desperate to see the rematch between Aspinall and Gane as soon as possible.
