Russian bantamweight, Umar Nurmagomedov has been hospitalized with severe flu, fever and vomiting. Khabib faces Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in lightweight championship unification bout. It takes place at the Flash Forum on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. It would have been one hell of a night for the Nurmagomedov family, as both Umar and Khabib would have fought on the same night.

The news was first reported by Russian News Agency TASS and shortly afterwards, Khabib took to Instagram to confirm that his cousin Umar has been hospitalized in Dubai due to a staphylococcal infection. He also reaffirmed that Umar would not fight at UFC 254, due to his illness.

Khabib’s post on Instagram, translated to English read, “The last few days, Umar has been in a hotel with a high fever, which was caused by a staphylococcal infection. But despite this, he and our entire team were determined that he would perform on October 24th. This morning, before our flight to Abu Dhabi, he got worse and was hospitalized in Dubai. Get well brother, so it was meant to be.”

Umar has been scheduled to fight three times and he has missed all three due to various reasons. The first one against Hunter Azure at UFC 249, was postponed due to COVID19. The next one Umar had to miss was the bout against Nathaniel Wood at UFC on ESPN 14, this was due to the death of his uncle and Khabib’s father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. And, now he is set to miss his third fight due to illness.
