In Short
  • Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner's rivalry is characterized by mutual respect and friendship, differing from traditional rivalries.
  • Kim Clijsters noted that while the players celebrate each other's successes, it can be emotionally challenging for competitors.
  • Carlos Alcaraz lost his No.1 ranking to Sinner after failing to defend his title at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Carlos Alcaraz watched his arch-rival Jannik Sinner dive into the pool after their Monte-Carlo Masters clash. Some from the tennis world think the rivalry between the top two players is too soft.

Alcaraz recently discussed his thoughts about this famous rivalry, saying that even though they have a lot of respect for each other, on the court, they are fierce competitors. Former World No.1 Kim Clijsters, during her Love All podcast, gave her take on the dynamic between the two youngsters.

There have been so many rivalries where the players can’t stand each other and try to stay away from each other as much as possible, whereas with these guys, it’s like they really embrace, and there’s a lot of respect, but they also enjoy...Like, Alcaraz actually stayed and watched the winner, the guy that just beat him before, jump off the diving board. I think I was always pretty good at giving my opponent their moment, but it was also painful, and so to go see them celebrate is something that is hurtful at times, as well. People are talking about… some people like that they have that, and then there’s people that are like, ‘No, I want the rivalry’.

Kim Clijsters said

It was Sinner’s first title in the tournament. As Alcaraz failed to defend his title, he lost the No.1 spot to the Italian. Alcaraz next played the Barcelona Open, and he would have reclaimed his No.1 spot from Sinner had he won the title, but an injury forced him to withdraw from his second match against Tomas Machac.

Patrick McEnroe explains why Carlos Alcaraz is more popular than Jannik Sinner

Patrick McEnroe thinks Carlos Alcaraz is a combination of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. During the Spout Podcast, McEnroe also claimed the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s personality is the reason why he is more popular than Jannik Sinner.

The point I’m making is that even when he was down in one of the biggest matches of his career, you know, the final of a major, he still has the wherewithal to communicate with us, the crowd, and the people there. He’s like a showman, a Broadway star, and an incredible athlete all rolled into one… It’s fun, he’s bringing a lot of kids into the game, which is important.

Sinner, on the other hand, remains calm and composed while competing and rarely shows any emotions. McEnroe said the four-time Grand Slam champion is more like Bjorn Borg, who was known for his stoic demeanor during matches.

Sinner chose not to compete this week and may end up skipping the Madrid Open to prioritize rest and recovery. Before clashing with Alcaraz for the first time this season, the 24-year-old became the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double by defeating Daniil Medvedev at the Indian Wells Masters and Jiri Lehecka at the Miami Open.

The win has helped Sinner improve his head-to-head record over the 22-year-old to 7-10. Alcaraz has won two titles so far this season. After beating Djokovic (who beat Sinner in the semifinal) in the Australian Open final, he defeated Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final.

The win in Melbourne made Alcaraz the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. In this year’s French Open, Sinner will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam, while Alcaraz will be chasing his third consecutive title.
