When the Atalanta Falcons made the bold decision to draft quarterback Michael Penix Jr. using the first-round pick, it instigated a big question of whether Kirk Cousins has fully recovered or not. Given, that he signed a lucrative deal with them earlier in the offseason after recovering from the season-ending Achilles injury.

There have been a handful of speculations surrounding Cousins’ health and thought process throughout the offseason, especially since the Falcons drafted his potential successor. That’s why in a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Cousins gave a much-needed update on his recovery, using a cheeky Super Bowl reference.

I’m good to go. I’ve told people for a while that if the Super Bowl were today, I’m playing. And that goes back probably — I think when I first got here, I was working out and we got maybe a week or two into my rehab and I did some drills where I said, ‘Hey, if the Super Bowl were today, I’m playing.’ And they seemed to agree.

Even though the quarterback remained positive about his recovery, he later hinted that he hadn’t fully healed. Therefore, the bigger question isn’t whether or not Cousins would play in the Super Bowl if happened today, but if he’s cleared to play the regular season game if happened today.

Kirk Cousins aside, Falcons brace for crucial early season tests

With that being that, the Falcons appeared to have a brutal start in the upcoming 2024 regular season. As they have four out of the first five games as primetime, that too against Super Bowl contender teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles in week, and Kansas City Chiefs in week 3.

Although the NFL has given them a little advantage by scheduling three of these primetime games at home, it remained a crucial period for the team if they intend to qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Cousins’ full recovery remains a question mark, regardless of the fact he signed a $180 million deal with the Falcons.

Enduring an Achilles injury at the age of 35 years is sure isn’t easy and Cousins admits it himself. As he hinted it is taking time for his body to get back in the old form. Perhaps, drafting rookie Penix Jr. was indeed a correct approach.
