Klay Thompson revealed that his father, Mychal Thompson, was initially disappointed when he chose to sign with the Dallas Mavericks over the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the two have since moved on, and Mychal now supports his son’s decision. 

Thompson explained that he wanted a change of scenery and new energy to rediscover success on the court. He could have signed a four-year, $80 million contract with the Lakers but instead opted for a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks.

Yeah, my dad was disappointed. We didn't really talk much about it, but at the end of the day, he was happy for me. He was a little selfish in his business interest because he wanted me to get home to the family. I was like, ‘Dad I’ve been in California my whole life. I gotta experience something new.’ He understood.

Mychal Thompson has come around to the idea of his son playing for the Mavericks. He sees the potential for Klay to thrive in Dallas and is excited about his son’s new opportunity.

Klay averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists last season, shooting 38.7% from three on 9.0 attempts per game. He is looking forward to contributing to the Mavericks’ success and proving that his decision was the right one.

Klay Thompson’s decision to sign with the Dallas Mavericks was driven by basketball considerations, as he took less money to join a team with elite perimeter talents in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. He was attracted to the team’s playing style, which creates the most open 3-point opportunities in the NBA, and believes he’ll thrive alongside players who can draw defensive attention away from him.
