Klay Thompson was confused about new teammate Max Christie
The Dallas Mavericks have undergone a whirlwind of changes in the past week, reshaping their roster in a bid to stay competitive in the Western Conference. While losing Luka Doncic was obviously a major blow, the emergence of Max Christie, who was thrown into the trade for Anthony Davis, has been a bright spot for the team. However, his teammate, Klay Thompson, might not have been entirely familiar with him.
Following the Mavericks’ narrow 129-128 loss to the Sacramento Kings, Thompson was asked about his thoughts on Max Christie, who had just played his fourth game in a Dallas uniform. It turns out that Killa Klay had a long-standing misconception about Christie’s background with his father, which he had only recently learned was incorrect. Thompson hilariously recalled the story to reporters postgame.
I thought that was Doug Christie’s son for like years. But I clarified that with him, and they’re not related. Same measurables, you know? 6’6”, off-guard.
Klay Thompson said with a laugh

Doug Christie is a former NBA veteran who spent 15 seasons in the league and is currently the interim head coach for the Sacramento Kings. Given Max Christie’s similar frame and skill set, it’s easy to see why Klay Thompson made the mix-up about his heritage. However, despite no family connection, the young guard has been making a name for himself in his own right.
After struggling to find a consistent role in Los Angeles, Christie has flourished under head coach Jason Kidd in Dallas. Since the trade, he has averaged an impressive 17.0 points per game while shooting 51.2% from the field. With increased playing time and a bigger offensive role with Dallas in the absence of the same depth that the Lakers had, the 22-year-old has embraced the opportunity to showcase his talent.
Klay Thompson gears up for return to Golden State
As Klay Thompson settles into his new reality in Dallas after choosing them in the offseason, an emotional homecoming looms on the horizon for a second time this season. The new-look Mavericks face off against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, the franchise where Thompson spent 13 seasons and became a 4x NBA champion.
His homecoming for the first time since leaving Dubnation was one of the biggest games of the regular season so far, with theatrics galore to welcome Captain Klay. However, the Thursday game will not just be emotional for Thompson, but also the Warriors fanbase that watched him grow into one of the most feared shooters in league history.
Meanwhile, Golden State has found a new rhythm, going 2-0 since acquiring Jimmy Butler in the eventful trade deadline. Butler has seamlessly fit into the Warriors’ defensive schemes while bringing some much-needed additional scoring and playmaking. Meanwhile, Klay Thompson’s former partner in crime, Stephen Curry has been on a tear, scoring 30+ points in his last four outings.
