Klay Thompson’s ‘exhausting’ time with Golden State led Stephen Curry and Warriors to move on
Klay Thompson was not happy with his situation with the Golden State Warriors.
Klay Thompson last year with Golden State was exhausting, forcing Stephen Curry and franchise to move on from their 4-time champion star
Klay Thompson did not have a great final season with the Golden State Warriors. He struggled with bad play and was even benched for the 1st time since his rookie season in the NBA. All that led to him signing with the Dallas Mavericks. However, reports are suggesting that Thompson’s attitude forced the franchise and Stephen Curry to move on from his Splash Brother.
95.7 The Game radio station led a discussion surrounding the exit of Klay Thompson once the news was confirmed. Reporter Jason Dumas was a part of the discussion and he revealed this:
Klay has been equally as exhausting behind the scenes. It's not as loud. It's not as loud because it's not you stomping on someone’s chest. If he's slamming stuff on the bench and sulking, and doing that on the court, how do you think it is in practice? How do you think it is in the locker room? It has been uncomfortable. It just doesn't come out as loudly as Draymond Green.Jason Dumas on 95.7 The Game radio station
Suggesting that Thompson was acting completely keeping his own interest. To the extent that it affected the team. Dumas’ suggestion brings to the forte the mindset of Klay Thompson. It seems even though he was struggling with his game, he did not like taking the blame. He did not take his benching well too and that eventually created a disconnect within the team.
So much so that Stephen Curry and the team preferred to move on. He would rather keep Draymond Green who was struggling with suspensions and ejections, than keep Thompson who was affecting their chemistry.
Klay Thompson did want to sit on the bench
The benching severely impacted Klay Thompson’s mentality. Instead of playing flat out from the bench, he wanted to return to a starter’s role. This was one of the deciding factors for his leaving as per Yahoo Sports reporter, Jake Fisher.
Flashing forward, if Thompson had returned to Golden State, the Warriors planned to bring Thompson off the bench behind sophomore guard Brandin Podziemski, sources said, after Golden State started its prized rookie for a good stretch during the second half of last season.Jake Fisher via Yahoo Sports
Klay Thompson has pride above anything else. Therefore, he knew his days as a starter were over.
He took a 3-year $50 million deal to join the Dallas Mavericks. That is far less money than what other teams were offering. But it allows him to start games and be an important piece of their puzzle.
Therefore, it seems the writing was on the wall for Klay Thompson. The Golden State Warriors were probably resigned to the fact that he was leaving. This explains why they did not extend his contract before he became a free agent.
