2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kurt Busch is one of the most accomplished racers in the history of the sport. He has raced for the best teams and OEMs of the sport, making him one of the most respected personals on the garage. Busch retired from full-time racing in 2023, after a concussion injury in 2022, while racing for 23XI Racing.
Kurt Busch hasn’t raced in any events since retirement, till recently where he got the medical clearance for the Race of Champions alongside Travis Pastrana. As part of the event, he talked to the media at Sydney’s Accor Stadium and was asked about his NASCAR future. He confirmed that he isn’t going run Cup races anymore.
I’m not going to go run a Cup car right now at 500 miles side-by-side with all the boys, right? And so it’s just the steps that it takes, and this is the perfect one. And so, a ripple effect from this, positive or negative, will open up more doors.
Kurt Busch said via Speedcafe.
Further talking in the interview, he discussed about a potential come back to stock car racing, with lower tier series. He admitted that he has to first adjust his body with racing again and sees the ROC event as a good start.
It’s to get back into anything, whether it’s an opportunity to do sports car stuff, rally, drag racing like I did before. We’ll see. We’ll see what my body tells me and the fun level, you can’t beat that here a Race of Champions.
Kurt Busch added.
Kurt Busch shares feelings about needing a proper retirement tour
In the same interview he was asked about if he ever wanted a retirement tour that the drivers from his generation such as Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick got. He answered that he never thought about it as he knew his time in the top-tier was coming to end. Busch has cherished every moment of his career and is happy about what he has.

My time was getting short anyhow. I was at the end of what I would call my last contract. I poured my heart and soul into it for 23 years, won a bunch of stuff, wrecked a bunch of stuff, and all in all I was fulfilled. And so, whether it ended there or I get back in the car later on, who knows? It was a good career that I can look back on and go, you know what? Two thumbs up.
Kurt Busch said.
The ex-racer doesn’t seem to be much keen on making a racing return as his body isn’t ready to go through the struggles as they used to do in the past. It would be interesting to see if the veteran will ever make a return to the stock car racing scene.
