One year later and up until the trade deadline, that question was still valid. Which is why trade target Kyle Kuzma rejected a move thinking they were not NBA title contenders. Kuzma could not be completely at fault here for his thought process. The Dallas Mavericks were just above .500 and struggling to string together a series of wins. Something that is extremely crucial in the playoffs. Therefore, he rejected a trade to the Mavericks at the time.

The 2011 champions instead, took his then-teammate Daniel Gafford and snatched another scoring forward in PJ Washington. Since then, the team has made adjustments and has played differently.

Washington has become their third most important scorer. His spacing and the all-around game have helped Gafford man the interior and feeding off lobs and no look passes every game. All of this has helped the Mavericks take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Essentially suggesting that they will end up contending for an NBA title for the first time in 13 years. On the flip side, Kyle Kuzma was part of one of the worst teams in the league. On top of that, the Washington Wizards are in full rebuild mode.
