France kicked off their 2024 Euros campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Austria. The 2018 World Cup winners were totally in their stride, even though the win costed them the fitness of their prolific No.10, Kylian Mbappe.
France’s only goal of the game came from an own goal, even though most of the work was done by Mbappe himself. In the final minutes of the game, Mbappe was forced off the pitch with a broken and bleeding nose!
France have a lot more to do if they are to lift the title this campaign, and will certainly need Mbappe in the process. Following the incident, several fans have raised concerns regarding his availability for the test of the tournament. However, a statement released by the national team as well as the player gave relief to thousands of supporters.

The France Football Federation stated that even though the player has a fracture in his nose, he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future. As an alternative, a mask will be provided for the player as a measure to return to the first team as soon as possible.
France pull off narrow victory against Austria in Group D opener
There is no doubt that Les Bleus are still bitter from the Round of 16 defeat to Switzerland in the last Euros. Mbappe and co. are out to right their wrongs this time around, and their resolve was on display right from the start against Austria. The 2018 World Cup winners took the lead through an own goal, even though Mbappe had the larger part to play in it.
The No.10 dribbled past the Austrian back line before sending in a cross hopeful of meeting a player in white inside the area. The ball however, struck opposition defender Maximilian Wober on the head and unfortunately for him, went inside his own net. In the second half, Mbappe got a golden chance to open his account at the tournament, but saw his shot go agonizingly wide of the post.
Despite the win, France are second in Group D behind the Netherlands by virtue of the greater number of goals scored by the Dutch. The Les Bleus take on Netherlands in one of the most exciting clashes of the group stage four days from now. Fans are hopeful that Kylian Mbappe will return to fitness in the meanwhile.
