It appears the LSU’s first touchdown of the season ended up being quite hefty on the team, especially on wide receiver Kyren Lacy, who’s making headlines for his controversial celebration of the score. The touchdown that would have contributed to LSU’s victory against the USC Trojans turned into a 15-yard penalty imposed on him.
It happened at the Modelo Vegas Kickoff Classic on Sunday night when LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier connected with Lacy on a 19-yard pass, resulting in a spectacular touchdown. However, it seems Lacy got overexcited and mimicked firing a rifle at his opponents’ defenders.
The wide receiver’s celebration immediately sparked criticism all over social media but prior to that, the officials promptly imposed a penalty on the Tigers for Lacy’s ‘unsportsmanlike behavior’. Following the incident, the receiver was seen making the same shooting gesture later on the sideline despite head coach Brian Kelly addressing him about it.
The 15-yard penalty that was imposed on LSU overshadowed the celebratory moment for the team’s first touchdown of the season. Sports commentator Kirk Herbstreit said that the touchdown indeed called for a celebration but admitted that there’s a certain line that one shouldn’t cross in overexcitement.
Since the departure of Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. from LSU to the NFL this offseason, Lacy plans to take upon a major role in the offensive line after finishing last season with 30 receptions for 558 yards and seven touchdowns.
LSU scrutinized over preparation for 2024 season after season-opening loss
After the Tigers lost their season opener to the Trojans on Sunday, fans have begun questioning whether the team was adequately prepared for the 2024 college football season. The backlash has primarily targeted head coach Kelly, whose record in season openers has now fallen to 0-3, marking LSU’s fifth consecutive loss.

Unfortunately, Lacy’s unsportsmanlike conduct wasn’t the only misstep by the LSU team. They also failed to convert crucial points during a goal attempt on their first possession in the fourth quarter, echoing similar struggles from the opening week of last season.
Among the many mistakes LSU made, one occurred during the opening drive when they stalled out in the red zone. Another critical error came in the final drive when they opted for a field goal instead of going for a touchdown, a decision that ultimately left them with a 17-13 defeat.
