Kyrie Irving has always been one of the leading voices when it comes to fighting for justice and social activism within the NBA. With the NBA celebrating the landmark occasion of Martin Luther King Jr.’s celebration of life on MLK day, it seems only fitting that Irving echoed the sentiments of one of the great social activists and NBA legends who stood beside Dr. King himself, Bill Russell.
Bill Russell was not just one of the greatest and most iconic basketball players of all time on the court, but his contributions off the court were equally, if not more, important. Russell championed the the Civil Rights movement in America standing alongside leaders such as Dr. King. On the celebration of MLK Day across America and the NBA, Kyrie Irving resonated with Russell’s sentiments on social media.
Bill would always keep at the core of his mission, that we must honor the past by shaping a future rooted in equality and justice for everyone. On #MLKday we will not lose sight of that mission. pic.twitter.com/wEue9jRAzd
