One of the major reasons why even neutral NBA fans were devastated by the Luka Doncic trade was the fact that his pairing with Kyrie Irving was one of the best things about the NBA during their two years of playing together. Irving and Doncic have a strong case to be the most entertaining or skilled NBA backcourt ever. The two of them are complete offensive players with the deepest of bags and fit perfectly.
The Dallas Mavericks had the chance to run it back with an even more improved roster in 2024-25. But a hasty and short-term mindset from their GM Nico Harrison, perhaps at the nudging of their new owners, led to Doncic being rushed back to play in January before he reinjured his calf. Harrison, who has been a fan of Anthony Davis and involved with him during his time with Nike, wanted his own guy at the helm.
All of these factors led to basketball fans only getting one full year of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic. But in that time, the duo put on a show that caused them to be crossover pop culture phenomena. Their pairing was so impressive that Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ even had a song called Kyrie & Luka on the former’s 2024 album The Death of Slim Shady as a B-side cut. For fans of pure scorers, their pairing was pure cinema.
Kyrie Irving has been streaming with a lot of regularity in this past NBA offseason. He is currently recovering from an ACL tear, which he suffered in February shortly after Doncic was traded. The former NBA champion has built a huge following among young basketball fans due to his aesthetically pleasing style. His Twitch streams have gained a lot of attention both from the streaming and the NBA fandoms of late.
In his latest stream, he was asked how good Luka Doncic was in practice sessions. Irving made no bones about his dominance, describing it thus:
Yes. (In practice) He’s giving you like 60, 18 and 18. I witnessed him give somebody 24 points in 3 minutes.

Kyrie Irving has the opportunity to be on a perennial contender with the Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks have lucked into Cooper Flagg despite losing the most precocious talent in the history of their franchise. Flagg’s arrival, coupled with their already deep roster in the frontcourt as well as the backcourt, allows them to build the kind of ‘Two Timelines’ approach that Warriors owner Joe Lacob had tried to get going, albeit unsuccessfully, around Stephen Curry in the past 4-5 seasons.

Even with Kyrie Irving out for much of the 2025-26 season, with D’Angelo Russell providing Anthony Davis a good playmaker in the pick-and-roll, the Mavericks will be able to hang with most of the teams they face as he recovers. Cooper Flagg also looks quite ready for the NBA. Judging from the reports of how he played with Team USA Select in preparation for the Paris Olympics, Flagg will soon be a major factor for Dallas.
Alongside Klay Thompson, Dereck Lively II and PJ Washington, this roster has the potential to be a two-way monster that can make life difficult even for the top teams in the Western Conference, including reigning champions OKC Thunder. While they are unlikely to be the top seeds, having homecourt advantage in the first, or even the second round of the playoffs, is something that would be on the cards. Especially if Kyrie Irving comes back early.
