Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic spent just two years and one full season together during their time with the Dallas Mavericks. The two guards formed a strong relationship both on and off the court, leading the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals in 13 years in 2024. However, they came up short as they lost to the Boston Celtics in five games in the finals.

Unfortunately, the NBA world could not see more of the two superstars together as Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers at the trade deadline last year in a blockbuster trade. While Doncic has gone on to make a name for himself with the Lakers, the Mavs have been on a downfall since.

Kyrie Irving spoke about his relationship with the Slovenian guard and showed support as he battles through a difficult time.

I’m glad he’s playing at this level and smiling again. We talk often and he told me everything, he’s my little brother and I’ll always support him. I miss him a lot here.

It has been over a year since Kyrie Irving was last seen on an NBA court after suffering an ACL tear. With Irving ruled out for the 2025-26 campaign, the Dallas Mavericks have been a shell of themselves as they sit at 13th place in the Western Conference standings with a 23-46 record and are most likely to miss a place in the play-in tournament this year.

Meanwhile, Luka Doncic has had a stellar campaign so far and is making a strong case for himself for league MVP. While Doncic has been nothing short of incredible over the last few games for the Lakers, he has been caught up in a custody battle over his two daughters and recently split from his fiancée, Anamaria Goltes.

With Goltes looking for child support, this could turn out to be an ugly battle between Doncic and the mother of his two daughters. But it is good to see Irving offering his support to his former teammate.

Luka Doncic has been on a tear for the Lakers over the last six games

Since his arrival in the middle of last season, Luka Doncic has been the focal point of this Lakers squad as LeBron James takes a step back at 41. He leads the league in scoring and is averaging 32.9 points per game so far this season.

The Lakers are coming off an impressive 100-92 victory over the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center on Monday night. Doncic scored a game-high 36 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Their latest win extended their winning streak to six games as the Lakers find themselves in third place in the Western Conference standings.

As Doncic has been battling with his personal issues over the last week, he has been unstoppable on the court during their winning streak. In their last six games, the Lakers guard is averaging 37.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 7.7 assists.

Cooper Flagg calls Kyrie Irving the perfect veteran teammate

In what has been a difficult 2025-26 season for the Dallas Mavericks, their number one pick from the 2025 NBA draft, Cooper Flagg, has been the only bright spark. The rookie has shown that he can lead the club for years to come and is the future face of the franchise.

While Irving has been ruled out for the entire season, it has not stopped him from giving support to his teammates. In a recent interview with Malika Andrews, Flagg spoke about why Kyrie Irving was the perfect veteran to have in what has been a difficult season.

I was driving home, and he had texted me. He was like, ‘Listen, I understand. Like, I’ve kind of been through this before. I don’t think there are a lot of people around you right now that can tell you they’ve been through somewhat of a similar thing’. There were definitely times where I was shaken up. I never lost that much in my life. But just to hear him say that and tell me that, I’m doing everything I need to be doing, and just to stay with it and stay positive, it definitely helped me out a lot.

Despite the poor record, Flagg has delighted Mavs fans with some impressive performances this season. He is currently averaging 20.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
