La Liga 2020/2021: Getafe vs FC Barcelona
Getafe managed to stun Barca on their way to a 1-0 victory in La Liga. Barcelona made lots of changes to their line-up and gave starts to Dest, Dembele and Pedri. However, this wasn’t enough as Barca lacked any kind of urgency in attack and now lay at ninth position in the table.
First Half
Barca started the first half well and got good opportunities to score a goal. However, both Messi and Griezmann were guilty of missing chances. Messi did manage to hit the post at least but Griezmann shot well above the bar when one on one with Getafe goalkeeper. Getafe though kept their composure and defended well throughout the first half.
Second Half
Getafe were kept quiet by Barca but De Jong gifted a penalty to them by fouling Dakonam. Jaime Mata stepped up and scored the penalty to give a 1-0 lead to Getafe. Furthermore, Barca brought on Coutinho and Fati to apply in the pressure and get the crucial equalizer. However, it wasn’t enough as Barca slipped to their first defeat of the season.
Busquets seemed to admit that Barcelona hadn’t played well enough in the post game reaction. He added, “Today was not our day. We only played well in one half and had the odd chance at goal. We wanted to play with more speed and fluidity but we weren’t able to, although we kept trying and we hit the woodwork right at the end.”
The match was shrouded in controversy as Koeman complained that Getafe player, Nyom had mocked him. Koeman added, “I told Bordalas that Nyom had shown me a lack of respect, he had said two or three very ugly things to me which I won’t repeat. He insulted me.”
Barcelona will need to quickly get back in shape as they face a huge fixture against Real Madrid in La Liga next week.
