“This is so rigged!” – Lakers and Grizzlies played an extra minute in the third quarter due to officiating blunder, fans react
The Lakers won 123-120 against the Grizzlies to move ahead in the play-in category.
The Lakers and Grizzlies played an extra minute due to an error with the game clock.
An error has been reported during the close game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies. The teams were going head to head as the Lakers won by just three points. Considering the battle in the fourth quarter, fans are not happy with the recently disclosed news.
According to NBA’s spokesperson Tim Frank, the game clock was set inaccurately which caused the players to play a full extra minute in the third quarter. After the shot clock violation late in the quarter, the game clock was also changed to 2:20 as opposed to 1:14. At the time, none of the referees, players, or coaches noticed the error of the game clock.
The Memphis Grizzlies missed a shot three times which resulted in the referee calling for a shot clock violation. As the ball was turned over to the Lakers with the new 24 seconds on the shot clock, the game clock was also accidentally changed. The change worked in favor of the Los Angeles Lakers as they had the lead by the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the teams went back and forth in terms of taking leads. However, the Lakers were successful at getting the win due to electrifying performances by LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The duo combined for 73 points to secure the 8th spot in the Western Conference.
NBA fans were upset by the game clock error during the Lakers vs. Grizzlies game
Fans have called out the officiating towards the Lakers on multiple occasions now. The team is frequently part of conversations for getting the most whistles during games. The Lakers have the highest free throw attempts in all of the NBA.
Hence, fans were upset about the team getting an extra minute to play to maintain their lead against the Grizzlies. The NBA netizens were also surprised by the occurrence of such an error which was left unnoticed. The social media user took to X to react to the error. Check out some of the reactions below.
The NBA also reported three incorrect calls that worked in the Lakers’ favor. LeBron James had two non-calls as he traveled twice in the fourth quarter. Also, a shooting call should have called on Lakers’ forward Rui Hachimura in the closing seconds. As a result, the whole game was poorly officiated which has led the fans to question whether the Lakers deserved the victory or not.
