Lamar Jackson‘s hamstring injury proved costly for the Baltimore Ravens. With one win from the first three games, the Ravens stared down a rough patch in the coming weeks.

Cooper Rush, a free agency signing in the offseason, replaced Jackson for the next few games. In his debut, Rush succumbed to a 44-10 defeat to the Texans, followed by a 17-3 loss at home against the Los Angeles Rams.

The losing streak left the Ravens teetering on the edge of falling out of playoff contention. Head coach John Harbaugh made a business decision after the Rams game. He dropped Rush to the bench.

Harbaugh brought back Tyler Huntley to the starting roster, and the Pro Bowler delivered a win against the Chicago Bears, improving the Ravens’ record to 2-5 just in time for Jackson’s return.

Lamar looked slightly rusty but still put up 28 points against a bad Dolphins team. An eight-point win against the Vikings and a seven-point victory against the Browns followed in the next two games.

In that span, Jackson completed just over 60% of his passes, 600+ scrimmage yards, and 5 passing touchdowns. He did not throw a single passing TD in the Browns game. In fact, statistically, it was one of the worst games of the 28-year-old’s career.

Jackson not only finished with a 47.6 passer rating (which has gradually decreased since returning from injury), but also took 5 sacks from the Browns’ pass rusher Myles Garrett. Interestingly, this was the second time he had been sacked 5 times in one game during the current campaign.

In Week 3, the Lions’ Al-Quadin Muhammad (2.5 sacks), Alex Anzalone (0.5 sacks), Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, and Trevor Nowaske teamed up to sack Jackson seven times over the four quarters.

Jackson ranks as the ninth most sacked quarterback this season, taking 23 sacks in just 7 games. Meanwhile, right behind him, Colts’ Daniel Jones has been brought down 21 times over 10 games.

Goddamn!!! I gotta talk to the offensive line about that…Imma holler at my guys about that. Talk to my guys about that.

Lamar Jackson said upon hearing the numbers

Jackson is still miles off from his worst (38) sack season (2021). His season ended prematurely after just 12 games due to an ankle injury. Two years later (2023), he came close to surpassing that total, but ended with one sack short (37) of the record. It was the same year that Jackson was voted the NFL MVP for the second time in his career.

Can Lamar Jackson save the Baltimore Ravens’ season?

Crazier things have happened in the past. The 2008 Colts team won nine straight games after starting the year 3-3. Six years later, the 2014 Carolina Panthers played divisional round football despite losing eight of their first twelve games.

Mathematically, the AFC North is still up for grabs. At one point, the Pittsburgh Steelers seemed like the obvious division leaders, but they also let the opportunity slip away.

According to Sports Illustrated, the Ravens have a 64.1% chance of qualifying for the playoffs through the wildcard round. The Ravens have the fifth-lowest strength of schedule in the NFL remaining (.442), but they still have to face the Steelers (twice), Packers, and Patriots.

  3. Indianapolis Colts (8-2)
  4. Los Angeles Chargers (7-4)
  5. Buffalo Bills (7-4)
  6. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4)
  7. Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4)
  8. Houston Texans (6-5)
  9. Kansas City Chiefs (5-5)
  10. Baltimore Ravens (5-5)
