The Australian Open is played in intense heat, especially during the first week at Rod Laver Arena. The temperature may soar even higher if Nick Kyrgios faces Jannik Sinner in the opening rounds at Melbourne Park.

Kyrgios, on the Nothing Major podcast, had discussed this potential matchup at the Australian Open. Many anticipate a lot of aggression and tension in this encounter. However, former British No. 1 Laura Robson hopes that respect between Kyrgios and Sinner remains intact.

I don’t think you ever want a situation where all respect goes out the window. If we can avoid that, that would be great. It would be super interesting if they played each other, especially in the early rounds, because Nick, he’s an unpredictable player anyway. But if you played him first round, you just know that you’re going to get no rhythm and you’ll be walking side to side on his service games quite a lot as he aces you.

Laura Robson said on Eurosport

Sinner has been the standout player of 2024, winning two Grand Slam titles and becoming the world No. 1. However, his season was overshadowed by a doping scandal that will carry into 2025. As a result, he has faced criticism from several players, including Kyrgios.

I think it would have to be close enough for the crowd to get that involved, wouldn’t it? It would have to get to a tight score line and something that they can grab onto. I want to say he’s got that challenge on his hands first to keep it really close, and then we’ll see. Because we know that Sinner is going to be sharp in that situation, too.

Laura Robson added

On the other hand, Kyrgios will return to competition for the first time since mid-2023. Since 2022, the Australian has played only one ATP event. He is set to make his comeback at the Brisbane International.

Fabio Fognini discusses Jannik Sinner’s impact

Fabio Fognini, a former world No. 9, recently shared his thoughts on Jannik Sinner’s incredible 2024 season. In an interview with Relevo, Fognini praised Sinner for his massive impact on Italian tennis. He believes Sinner’s success has inspired young players in Italy.

With him, a huge movement has been created. Now there are many children who play tennis, and this is the most important thing.

Fabio Fognini said on Relevo

Sinner’s achievements in 2024 were remarkable. He started the year by winning his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, defeating Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling five-set match. Later in the season, he secured his second Major trophy at the US Open, beating Taylor Fritz in the final.

Alongside his Grand Slam victories, Sinner dominated the ATP Tour. He added three Masters 1000 titles to his name, winning in Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai. To cap off the season, he won the ATP Finals for the first time in his career.

Sinner’s year ended on another high note as he helped Italy defend their Davis Cup title. It was a historic season for the Italian star, cementing his place at the top of the tennis world and inspiring a new generation of players in his home country.
