Jannik Sinner will go to Wimbledon as one of the favorites, but many believe he doesn’t play well on grass. Former British No. 1 Laura Robson explained in an interview the one area Sinner has improved just like women’s World No. 1 Iga Swiatek whose game suits more on clay.
Sinner won his fourth title of the season in the Halle Open by beating Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets, while Swiatek decided to skip the Berlin Open to rest and recover after continuously playing on clay and is set to play America’s Sofia Kenin in the first round of Wimbledon. Robson observed that like Swiatek, Sinner has learned how to flatten his shots on grass.
Everyone has been saying Sinner’s game doesn’t suit grass, but they seemed to forget he already made the semis at Wimbledon last year...He has been working on coming forward a bit more and a little like Iga he has learned to flatten his shots out a little more on this surface. Given the fact he has hardly lost any matches this year, he is going to have a lot of confidence coming into Wimbledon.Laura Robson told Tennis 365
Sinner reached the semifinals last year losing to World No. 2 Novak Djokovic. The Italian, who is 38-3 on the season and is a first seed for the first time in a Grand Slam event will face Germany’s unseeded Yannick Hanfmann in the first round.
Jannik Sinner may meet Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals
If Jannik Sinner reaches the semifinals, he may face Carlos Alcaraz for the second time at a major final this year. In the Roland Garros semifinals as well, these two youngsters met with Alcaraz emerging victorious in five sets.
The Spaniard then went on to win his third Grand Slam title by beating Alexander Zverev in five sets in the summit clash. Alcaraz, who failed to defend his Queen’s Club Championships this season, will also walk onto the Wimbledon courts as the defending champion as he won his first title at SW19 last year by upsetting seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in five sets.
Alcaraz will kick-start his campaign by meeting Estonia’s Mark Lajal while the Serb will be facing Vit Kopriva in the first round. Sinner, on the other hand, has a 1-0 head-to-head record over his first-round opponent Yannick Hanfmann, previously meeting him in the 2023 US Open first round.
