Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks is optimistic about having Jannik Sinner in future editions. The tournament missed out on the World No. 1 this year, but hopes to bring him to San Francisco, the venue for the 2025 Laver Cup.
The tournament made a major breakthrough in 2024 with Carlos Alcaraz making his debut. However, fans faced disappointment when Rafael Nadal withdrew at the last minute. Many criticized the Spanish legend for the timing of his withdrawal, as it occurred after tickets had been purchased.
Look, the way the system works is each year the top three players for both sides get invited. In the case of the World, they all accepted, and more than that, as you go down the line. On the other side, it always comes down to individual schedules and what are their priorities at that particular time.Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks said (H/T: Tennis365)
The Laver Cup has now been held for eight years, with Team Europe winning five of the seven editions. The 2020 edition was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I know we are talking to him [Sinner] right now. We’d love to have him. But sometimes their schedules, sponsor commitments, and so forth make them commit to certain tournaments. They do need a break, and sometimes that falls on the Laver Cup week and we miss out.Steve Zacks added
Until 2022, the tournament didn’t have to worry about viewership due to Roger Federer’s presence. However, after the Swiss Maestro’s retirement in 2022, the tournament saw a significant decline in viewership in 2023. As a result, the Laver Cup hopes to attract high-profile players like Sinner to retain its audience.
Jannik Sinner and Rafael Nadal set to headline Davis Cup finals
Spain has named Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in their five-man Davis Cup team for the finals in Malaga. Italian world No.1 Jannik Sinner will also take part in the competition’s final eight.
Nadal, now 38, has struggled with injuries and missed several key events, including the US Open and Laver Cup. He has only played in one of the last seven Grand Slams.
Alcaraz, who won both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, will lead Spain’s Davis Cup hopes. The team is aiming to win their first title since 2019, starting with a match against the Netherlands.
Sinner, who won the US Open and Australian Open this year, is included in Italy’s team for the finals, set to begin on November 19. He recently missed out on Davis Cup action for Italy as Matteo Berrettini did the job in his absence.
