LeBron James called Klay Thompson as soon as free agency opened

Klay Thompson shocked the NBA world as he left the Golden State Warriors by entering free agency. The shooter is parting ways with his ‘Splash Brother’ Stephen Curry, hoping to find a better offer in a different team. Thompson has a few options, including the Los Angeles Lakers. Reportedly, the Lakers superstar LeBron James and Curry’s on-court rival has already made moves to recruit Thompson.

Entering his 22nd season, LeBron James is trying his best to improve the Lakers’ roster. After deciding to stay with the Lakers, James was even rumored to take a pay cut to add another star to the team. Now, while talking on Sports Center, veteran insider Adrian Wojnarowski revealed that James even made efforts to convince Klay Thompson. 

I'm told LeBron James called Klay Thompson right when free agency opened at 6 pm Eastern. Reached out, talked to Thompson. The expectations that I have right now are these conversations, this negotiation will go into tomorrow. There probably will not be a resolution tonight.

Woj revealed that multiple teams other than the Lakers, including the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers, are interested in Thompson. The four-time champion is engaged in conversations with all these teams and James. Thompson is expected to make a decision in the next couple of days.

Before Woj dropped the news, another Insider, Marc Stein, also revealed that James was ‘hopeful’ that the Lakers would outbid the Mavericks to recruit Thompson. Adding Thompson to the Lakers would certainly be beneficial as the team can improve their offense with his shooting skills. It would be interesting to see if Thompson makes James’ wish reality and chooses the Lakers.

Considering how often the Warriors have faced James in the playoffs, the team has had a rocky relationship with the star. In 2016, Thompson’s comments about James’ feelings getting ‘hurt’ exemplify the competitiveness between the teams. However, years after that, Thompson and James shared a healthy bond.

Thompson has praised James for his longevity and incredible time at the Cleveland Cavaliers. James has also done the same, as he was hyped to see Thompson back from the injury. Now, Thompson is interested in the Lakers’ offer and teaming up with James as revealed by Brad Turner.

Considering the championship and finals history between the duo, James and Thompson may be able to create great on-court chemistry. The pair being teammates would certainly be an unusual visual for the NBA fans. All eyes are set on Thompson’s landing spot for his 14th season.
