There is no doubt that LeBron James has cemented himself as one of, if not the, greatest players of all time. He has rewritten statistical records like never before, won multiple championships, and so much more throughout his 23-year career in the NBA.

Millions of fans all over the world idolize James. He has been carrying the league on his shoulders as the face of the NBA for nearly two decades and remains the biggest attraction to date. But like everyone else, James has been inspired by other legends.

The four-time champion sat down for an interview at the CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit and revealed his two biggest inspirations on and off the court.

MJ (Michael Jordan) has been my biggest inspiration in basketball. But Jay has been my biggest inspiration otherwise. When I make decisions. I think, ‘Will this make him proud?’

Michael Jordan is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time. His records, championships and competitiveness set him apart from the rest of the league and put him in a tier of his own. Since then, there have been several players in the NBA who have challenged the throne, but no one has done it like James.

While James was inspired by Jordan himself, his biggest inspiration is Jay-Z. James shares a good relationship and has even celebrated together with the music artist in the past. Jay-Z is often seen court-side embracing and supporting James during games.

The rapper is arguably the greatest rapper of all time. He is the wealthiest music artist in history, and his music is built on a rags-to-riches narrative. Hence, it is not surprising to see James draw inspiration from one of the greats in his field. Like James, Jay-Z has won numerous accolades, including 25 Grammy Awards.

LeBron James drew parallels with Michael Jordan

The debate for the GOAT between Jordan and James has been going on for a decade now. While it is almost impossible to choose between the two and, at the end of the day, it is a matter of preference, it is a no-brainer that the two have taken the league to a whole different level and continue to inspire millions.

During the interview, James could not help but from drawing parallels to the Chicago Bulls legend when asked about his career nearing its end.

My favorite basketball player of all time and my inspiration growing up was Michael Jordan. There was an end for him. So, if there was an end for one of the greatest to ever play a game of basketball, that I ever watched play basketball, then it’s inevitable to all of us.

Almost every player from James’ era was inspired by Jordan. Similarly, a lot of players from today’s generation have James as their idol. However, the remarkable feat is that James will be entering his 24th season in the NBA and has been playing against players who have grown up watching him play.

When will LeBron James know his NBA career is over?

Recently, it was revealed by Rich Paul that LeBron James may play beyond the 2026-27 campaign. While it is unbelievable that James plans to continue to play for a few more years, there is no reason to hang up his boots yet. Last season, he averaged 20.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 appearances.

His individual numbers may not be the same as they were before, but he showed everyone that he can still play at a very high level and can even contribute to a team with championship aspirations. Hence, he has been linked to several clubs looking to contend for a title next year.

When asked about how he feels that the end is near, James spoke about the inevitability of his career coming to an end.

It’s inevitable to all of us. So, I know that the game of basketball will always be with me, no matter what, but also I am very conscientious and understanding that, once it’s over, then that’s fine too. I gave it everything I had. One of the biggest factors as far as when the process for me becomes, like, overbearing. So, once the process becomes so overbearing, I’m not training in July, I’m not training in August to get ready for a season in October, that’s for sure when I know it’ll be over for me.

James’ sustained excellence is one of the main reasons why many regard him as the greatest ever. He continues to respect the process and still has the desire to win a championship after 23 years. However, the NBA awaits his decision about his future.
