Minnesota Lynx brought disappointment for Spike Lee after beating his New York Liberty in Game 1 of WNBA Finals

The first game of the 2024 WNBA Finals played out today. With the New York Liberty having home-court advantage, the likes of legendary director Spike Lee showed up. He and other New Yorkers believe this to be the best chance for the city to win its first basketball title in over half a century. However, the visiting Minnesota Lynx did something that disappointed the fans and Lee.

The way the game started, Spike Lee and the hordes of New York Liberty fans felt their time was coming. The team ran out to hold an almost double-point lead. All thanks to center Jonquel Jones leading the charge. They managed to keep their lead for much of the game, even though the Lynx kept chipping away at the lead. A 10-2 run in the fourth again gave the Liberty a double-digit lead. At that moment, even the commentators talked about a win for the New York Liberty.

But it all started to change after that scoring run. The Minnesota Lynx started blitzing and clamping down on the likes of Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu while trapping and double-teaming Jones. Then, the Minnesota Lynx trio of Napheesa Collier, Kayla McBride, and Courtney Williams went on the attack.

They clawed back on the deficit and made it a one-possession game. But Liberty tried its best to stop them, only for Williams to heave a three-pointer and draw a foul in the dying minutes. New York had one last possession to win it, but Breanna Stewart, last season’s MVP, could not score the winning free throw.

Spike Lee going through the emotions has fans lighting up social media

Spike Lee’s emotions weren’t done as that missed free throw ensured game 1 of the 2024 WNBA Finals went to overtime. But the Lynx had the momentum and the edge. They continued to score and iced the game with a Napheesa Collier fadeaway jumper. It left Lee looking lost and producing a meme-worthy sulk on the sidelines.

He was hoping a Game 1 win would give the Liberty the edge. But now, his other New York team will have to battle back. Fans watching his reactions from the bench could not hold themselves back.
