Lewis Hamilton claimed his second win of the season at the Portugal GP, as he surpassed his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, who finished on pole position. The Brit driver has accumulated 69 points in his three races so far, and has extended his lead at the top to 8 points.
However, Lewis Hamilton revealed a mistake at the Portugal GP, which could have cost him the victory. After the safety car restart, Max Verstappen, running P3, surpassed Hamilton. However, he regained his spot on the very next lap, and eventually won the race.
“It was interesting because I was focusing on Valtteri naturally, and literally just for a split second I looked in my mirrors to see where Max was and in that split second that’s when Valtteri went,” Hamilton told reporters.
“So that wasn’t great, and then I was in Valtteri’s tow and Max was about to pull out and I pulled out and gave him Valtteri’s tow, and I was like ‘you idiot’ to myself,” he added.
Portugal had a great track: Hamilton
Max Verstappen did not have the best weekend in Portugal, as he struggled to get any sort of grip. However, Lewis Hamilton enjoyed driving in Portugal, and claimed that it was a great track to drive on. Moreover, he believes that Mercedes had got their strategy spot on for the Portugal leg.
“What a great track,” said the 36-year-old Briton. “It really enabled us to fight closely in that first stint and I think that’s what the fans want, and what I want, from a racing point of view,” he continued.
“This track is really great because you can have certain different lines in certain corners, a bit like Austin, so it was really awesome. At this track there’s not a huge amount of grip. You’ve got the hardest compounds but that means they can do the race distance and there’s not a huge amount of wear,” Hamilton added.
